Experimental Design

The Law of Conservation of Mass

We are tasked to design an experiment

 The purpose of this expiriment is to justify the conservation of mass.

 Hypothesis: The marble will react with Hydrochloric acid and forming some kind of gas and the

color of the chips will change. There will also be bubble formation by combining acid and marble

chips

For materials :

1 flask

1 scale

Hydrochloric acid

Marble chips

A balloon
Steps : To give an outline of what we are doing, here are the steps

1. First we need to eliminate the mass of our flask

2. To not let the air escape from the beaker, we will use the method of putting the marble chips in the

balloon.

3. After that we will cover the mouth of the beaker and we measure it with our scale to see the mass

before they have reacted.

4. Then we shall pour the chips from the balloon into the acetic acid already placed in the beaker to get

the mass of after it has reacted.

5. Compare the two results to verify the experiment as a success if both are the same mass.

Summarizing why we are putting marble in the balloon beforehand is for the air to not escape, so that the

mass of the outcome solution will not be much a difference in mass when we mix it together.

Results :

Total without mixing: 64.2 gram

Total when mixing: 64.2 gram

We will explain our experiment by designed to measure the mass of our products, resulted in a success in

proving the Law of Conservation of Mass. Before we put the marble chips in the acid which is hydrochloric

acid, the mass was 64.2 and after we poured both in without any air leakinng in. The scale still stated 64.2

gram.
