ASSIGNMENT 1
Individual Assignment
Value: 30%

Rationale
The assignment explores the question of the possible rationales for business ethics:
enlightened self-interest, principles, consistency, social contract, or some hybrid of these.
Question
Some have argued that the objective of a business organization is to just make profit. Thus, a
business organization is not obliged to do more than just obeying the existing laws of the
country. Discuss whether you agree with this.

MGT305 Business Ethics & Social Responsibility
I. INTRODUCTION
Economists and entrepreneurs have different definitions of business. Most agree that
business is vital to helping the economy grow and creating job opportunities in all societies.
Thereby, the leaders of the business organization always do what they think is right to achieve
profits for the company or the shareholders who own shares of the business in particular. So
some people have argued that the goal of a business organization is to make only profits.
Therefore, a business organization is not obliged to do more than just obey the current laws of
the country. With the above point of view, I completely disagree with the above opinion. In my
opinion, as the economy grows, the competition between enterprises will be increasingly
complex and fierce, the activities showing social responsibility will help businesses reduce risks
and build a reputation, improve reputation, thereby bringing many business benefits for
businesses. Therefore, compliance with the law is not enough, but enterprises must also have
ethics and social responsibility.
First, the Law is a system that regulates our behavior towards ethical standards, but the
law cannot cover all human activities. The business organization is obliged to do more or simply
obey the current laws of the country as chosen by the business organization. But if a company
has to comply more on legal issues such as having conscience, having a responsible behavior
towards society, taking care of the rights and interests, the happiness of others in all the
relationship with the company in the business process will inevitably create profits, healthy and
sustainable profits and is the core condition to help the company achieve sustainable
development, thereby contributing to economic development.
Second, If we go against the natural law, go against the truth by only caring for our own
interests, creating a lot of profit for the organization without caring for the interests of others,
of society, we will have the results like? In my opinion, stating that the role of business is to
make profits is like saying the role of an animal (dog) is to eat, sleep and breathe. If a company
is at a loss, it will die just like a dog can't eat, but it doesn't mean that the purpose of life is to
eat. This shows that the goal of a business organization to make a profit is not only enough to
comply with the current laws of the country, but also to do more such as doing business ethics
and social responsibility because business is an organization of society. So we must have social
responsibility.
Another aspect shows that: in order to achieve the profit purpose, tax evasion businesses
still comply with current state laws such as establishing a "ghost" enterprise "ghost" enterprise
6
MGT305 Business Ethics & Social Responsibility
is an enterprise is established under the provisions of the Law on Enterprises but actually does
not do business, only for the purpose of meeting the conditions to issue invoices, then sells
invoices to other entities or intermediaries to issue purchase invoices. Short sale, fake
documents to apply for a tax refund. Alternatively, use a fake invoice or a blank invoice and
enter the beneficial price yourself. Illegal use of invoices and documents; Illegal use of invoices
and documents; the invoice has no value and is used to declare tax to reduce tax payable or
increase tax refunded or exempted or reduced. Besides, do not issue invoices although it is
stated that, for transactions worth over 200,000 VND, the seller must issue invoices to the
buyer. But in fact, buyers are not used to taking invoices, and sellers deliberately "forget" to
issue invoices to take advantage of VAT. And it will happen that there are many virtual
inventories, then the accountant frantically takes care of making procedures, records of
destruction of materials, goods or reduces the quantity, value of materials, goods are not true
reduces the payable tax amount or increases the amount of tax refunded, exempted, or reduced.
In this tax evasion business case, although knowing that the enterprise has complied with the
law, it violates business ethics. Compliance with the law here is not only not violating the law
but also related to corporate social responsibility. Without emphasizing corporate social
responsibility, the social consequences cannot be compensated for by the results of economic
growth from for-profit business purposes. The moral responsibility here is a responsibility
regulated by conscience. No one can force businesses to spend money building gratitude houses
or classes of love, other than the impulse of conscience. However, loving people as if loving
your body is the ethic of living in life. If this ethic binds all members of society, it cannot fail
to bind businesses. So, humane and charitable society is very important to doing business. The
above analysis, further confirms that the business organization must have the obligation or do
more to comply with the current laws of the State such as ethical business and social
responsibility. Because in such a society, wealth will be accepted.
Most of us are well aware of this, but not everyone can live and do business with win-win or
selflessness. There has been a lot of evidence to clearly show this: Many companies are on
strike, beaten by employees because of the exploitation of their labor, many go bankrupt due to
a consumer boycott when they turn their backs on their products they have many substances
that are harmful to human health and their production process pollutes and destroys the living
environment. Even though this business organization pays a full salary, buy enough insurance
for its employees, still comply with the law to ensure full pay, enough insurance, so Business
must make a profit, but do this process in the most right ways way that benefits each other and
in deep awareness of the mutual relationship between people and the society around us. Finally,
Palm oil is now used in a wide variety of processed foods and consumer products. Due to the

increased demand, the number of organizations - palm oil companies, the spread of palm oil
production, for the purpose of making a profit, organizations have indirectly harmful behavior
to the wildlife and danger to the planet. Not only that, the area of palm oil increased by 15 times
in Malaysia and Indonesia so quickly that the violence of all the forests of this country will
disappear by 2020. Thus, in this case, the planting of palm oil for profit but business
organizations just need to comply with the law and try to make a profit. And regardless of
ethical issues, or other social responsibility such as behavior indirectly harming wildlife and
danger to the planet, etc. Obviously, the case of palm oil gives us see the danger of making
profits as the sole goal and most importantly it causes unnecessary suffering for quite a few
people "when only profit is concerned without corporate social responsibility (CSR). But when
this business organization grows and produces palm oil in accordance with 'sustainable' that is,
the oil can be certified as manufactured and does not harm the environment or society. Palm oil
is reassuring to support the trust of using palm oil so that organizations - enterprises can gain
the trust of individual employees, or shareholders, and especially consumers. The customer or
not is due to the present moment the deciding factors such as brand, quality, and brand
contribution are the deciding factors tools that create a competitive advantage for your business.
This shows that, when corporate organizations have an ethical and social responsibility, the
more profits they make, gain trust from customers, thereby attracting human resources not only
at home but also abroad to attract foreign (international) investment capital.
III. CONCLUSION
So according to what has been analyzed above, it is the benefits to bring when business
organizations do more than comply with the law. As the owner of a business, if I decide all
activities as well as the success or failure of the business itself. I do not continue to focus on
making a lot of profits in the old way (simply obey the law), but I follow the new and more
correct approach that means taking ethics, corporate social responsibility (CSR), yes more
responsibility to move towards sustainable development so that profits can be made.
