Student Reflection (Thoroughly answer all questions)
How has this clinical rotation helped to define your role as a nurse? Please explain.
This clinical rotation has been my most productive clinical rotation so far throughout my entire nursing school career. I truly feel
like I have learned so much from these past six weeks. In general, basically all of my nursing skills have improved since last
semesters clinicals. I have figured out how to manage my time throughout the day, staying productive but also not becoming too
overwhelmed with things to do all at once. With each experience administering medications, I have become less nervous and more
certain in my abilities. My assessment skills have become like second nature to me, as along with charting them. I have also
definitely gotten better at figuring out the top priorities for my patients, as well as interventions that can be done to improve
patient outcomes. While doing all of these things, my communications skills with patients and their families, as well as other nurses
and healthcare workers have also improved.
How did you specifically meet the course goals for this course? Give detail for each. (Reminder, course goals are listed on the
evaluation here in blue).
I did many things to meet the first course goal (analyze the effectiveness of the plan of care). I created a priority list for each of my
patients every day at clinical, allowing me to determine which nursing tasks were most important to do first. I completed many
assessments on all of my patients. From these assessments, I was able to come up with interventions that could benefit my
patients. Using patient charts and listening to report helped me to gain a better understanding of my patients and what I can do to
help them. To meet course goal number two (seek opportunities that promote professional growth), I spent my clinical days
working with other students and their patients (as well as my own) to get even more experiences and chances to see new things. I
completed all of my assignments/evaluations, wore my clinical uniform, and came prepared for each day at clinical. There were
many things that I did to achieve course goal three (provide patient-centered care with faculty as resource). I followed appropriate
infection control practices, documented all of the patient care that I gave, communicated effectively with patients and healthcare
workers, and successfully administered medications by using the six rights and three checks.
What is the biggest take away you have from this clinical rotation and how will that affect your future practice?
Although nursing school is the most stressful thing I have ever had to go through, being able to use what I learned during class at
clinicals makes it all worth it. I truly love having the opportunity to be able to participate at clinicals, caring for patients, and doing
what I love. Each semester I feel myself getting better and better with my nursing abilities, making me even more excited for what
the future holds for me. I can’t wait to see myself improve even more during my time as a student. I will take everything that I
learned during this clinical rotation with me in my future practice, making me a better student nurse and eventually registered
nurse!
I have many goals for myself that I would like to achieve during my next clinical rotation. I want to get more practice administering
different types of medications (hanging IV bags, giving injections, etc.). I have only had two opportunities to give medications at
clinicals. From these two chances, I have already seen great improvement from my second time compared to my first. I can only
imagine how much more I will improve with every experience I get. I would like to get more practice with my basic clinical skills.
For example, skills such as inserting Foley catheters or nasogastric tubes, completing dressing changes, and getting more
comfortable caring for patients with ostomies or drains.
Faculty Comments/ Student Learning Goals (Goals must be established even if performance is satisfactory. If an item was
identified as N or U, narrative comments are necessary to clarify student performance along with goals to improve performance).
Throughout the clinical rotation Hannah was very aware of her surroundings. There were many nuanced discussions or situations
that occurred with her or another student on the floor, and Hannah always seemed to pick it up to discuss at post conference or in
her weekly reflections. Her clinical skills and thinking markedly improved over the last 6 weeks, specifically her time management
split of patient care and charting. While Hannah has expressed the wish to improve her clinical skills, they will inevitably come in
time once on the floor full time as a new graduate nurse. Over the next semester and a half, it is my hope that she can continue her
development with critical thinking and prioritization so she can be as successful as possible right from the get-go when she
graduates.
