Student Reflection (Thoroughly answer all questions)
How has this clinical rotation helped to define your role as a nurse? Please explain.
No matter what field of nursing you go into, you will always deal with patients that need some kind of psychiatric care. This being
said, I took this clinical rotation very seriously knowing that I will definitely use these skills at some point in my career. I really
wanted to feel comfortable when providing nursing care to a patient with a psychiatric disorder by the end of this two weeks. I feel
like I definitely met my goal by the end of this psychiatric clinical rotation. With more practice working with psychiatric patients, I
can only imagine how much my skills will advance. Excellent. Well said.
How did you specifically meet the course goals for this course? Give detail for each. (Reminder, course goals are listed on the
evaluation here in blue).
I met course goal #1 (analyze the effectiveness of the plan of care) in many ways. I completed many assessments, such as a mental
status exam, which evaluated my patients behavioral and cognitive functioning. I used patient charts to look over background
information about my patient and kept me up to date on my patient’s condition from day to day. To meet course goal #2 (seek
opportunities that promote professional growth), I came to clinical prepared in the correct uniform. I actively participated during
this clinical rotation by providing my input to the group whenever I could and by asking any questions that I had. Although during
this clinical we did not administer any medications to the patients, I did always make sure to look up my patient’s medications. By
knowing the medications side effects and nursing implications, I was able to meet course goal #3 (provide patient-centered care
with faculty as resource). I was also able to identify my patient’s priority problem and provide teaching based on that topic. By
doing this, I met course goal #4 (incorporates evidence-based rationales that support the patient plan of care) and course goal #3
(specifically patient education needs). The Focused Interaction assignment also covers most of Goal #1. Very good.
What is the biggest take away you have from this clinical rotation and how will that affect your future practice?
The biggest take away that I have from this clinical rotation is just how different every kind of nursing is. Before this clinical rotation
started, I have had no experience working with patients with mental disorders. I had never been on a psychiatric unit before, so as
you can imagine I was a little nervous and slightly overwhelmed. When I imagined being on a psychiatric unit, I pictured patients
screaming and fighting. In reality, I saw the opposite. The patients were calm, cooperative, and friendly. I saw a huge improvement
in my therapeutic communication techniques by the end of this rotation that I will be happy to bring forward with me in my
nursing career. Even with all of the differences in nursing, there are also many similarities. Nurses are always caring for sick
patients, whether that be a physical or emotional disorder. Knowing how to care for all different types of patients is a good
characteristic for healthcare workers to have, and I am glad I will be able to take this experience with me no matter where I end up.
Excellent.
Hannah, you didn’t submit the Focused Interaction rubric with student comments. However, you do exceptionally well
documenting your thoughts in the reflective practice (above) that I was willing to overlook the other. 😊
Your Focused Interaction paper was exemplary. You did an excellent job documenting the assessment, planning,
implementation, and evaluation of a teaching plan for the patient with a mental illness. If your nursing care is as good as this
paper, you will be caring for some very lucky patients. Well done! Focused Interaction paper = 50/50
