When replacing an air dryer, don’t focus on just the dryer but consider a PM on the air supply system. Therefore you should replace the related
devices in the air supply system: governor, check valves, pressure relief valve on the supply tank and low pressure warning switches on both primary
& secondary tanks. Also check the compressor discharge line for carbon build up.

6 Air Dryer Cartridges
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This is the true filter of the air dryer. Most current designs
use dessicant beads, which trap moisture and contaminants in their miniature craters. The
TRUCK / TRACTOR SYSTEMS
purge process uses system air pressure to blast through the dessicant bed, blowing the
contaminants and moisture off the individual beads and out the purge valve.

Considering all the brake system components and air spring suspensions, there are thousands of dollars of air devices downstream
from the air dryer. This cartridge is the most important component to extend their life. So replace this at least every year and more often
if your compressor is passing excess oil.
An air compressor passing excess oil is the enemy of dessicant. It coats the beads, keeping them from trapping moisture. Until you replace the
compressor, replace this cartridge often. How often . . . as soon as you see moisture or contaminants in the wet tank.
AV109994 AV950011
Every time you replace a cartridge; check the compressor discharge line for blockage. Oil most likely destroyed your cartridge
and oil combined with heat at the compressor discharge creates carbon build up in the discharge line and/or fitting.
Air Governors 7
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Cut-in setting engages the compressor to re-pressure
the air system. Cut-out stops the process and let’s the air compressor “freewheel.”
AV275491
All governors are preset for cut in/cut out. If you replace the governor and
air system pressure is not correct DO NOT try to adjust the governor. The
problem is most likely in the unloader area of the compressor or other
downstream devices disrupting proper air flow. Don’t forget you could have a
bad gauge.
These look like bobtail limiting valves and proportioning valve BUT THEY DO NOT PERFORM THE SAME FUNCTION.
All bobtail limiting valves and proportioning valves have an extra control port. PBC does not supply either.

Automatic Drain Valve 11
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: There are two basic drain valve styles, automatic and manual.
The automatic design is only used on truck/tractors and engages from pressure variation in the tank.
This is a high mortality part because contaminants can easily disrupt re-sealing at the exhaust. If this occurs,
try disassembling the drain valve and blowing it out, then re-assembling. If you have to replace the valve and you still
have contaminants in the tank, the new valve can leak quickly. At that point you need to drain and clean out the tank.

12 Relay Valves
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Typically from a signal from a foot valve or hand control
valve, this device meters tank air to control the application and release of service brakes.
TRUCK / TRACTOR SYSTEMS
The two port design typically controls both chambers on a single axle, four port designs control
all four chambers on a tandem. Tractor spring brake control valves can look very similar but are
not interchangeable. Note – in rare occasions, you might find these on trailers.
Each relay valve part number is designed with a specific crack pressure. When replacing
a relay valve, use the same design and part number. Using the incorrect valve could
AV279180 disrupt the brake timing and balance of the vehicle.
AV28060
Don’t install 90° or 45° fittings where they were not originally used. This can affect brake timing and balance
especially in the service (control) circuit.

16 Spring Brake Control Valves – Trailer
TRAILER & DOLLY SYSTEMS GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This device controls the trailer spring brakes during
parking or emergency applications. It also supplies the air pressure to the air tanks.
This application is for trailer air systems post FMVSS 121, both ABS and non-ABS systems.
A single valve is used for single or dual air tank systems.
Almost all these are functionally interchangeable but the plumbing is very different. Some of them look similar except the top is rotated. When
replacing these, be careful to identify the lines as you remove the old valve. And look closely at the port identification on the old and new valve so
you don’t reconnect the lines to the wrong ports.

HT1068 Mounting Pad – Std. Pk. 1
When replacing a tank, always replace the mounting pads. If you don’t have mounting pads, make them. If not the brackets are metal to metal
creating excess vibration. This can easily break the mounting nipple at the spring brake control valve because they are much heavier than the relay
valves.
Be careful with teflon tape, the smallest piece that gets into the system can cause multiple device failures or leakage.
Liquid sealant is preferred.
