ITSE 1.4 Innovative Designer: Students use a variety of technologies within a design process to identify and
solve problems by creating new, useful or imaginative solutions.
Assessment:
Students will complete a formative assessment, a Kahoot! quiz, after watching a video and reading an article about writing a
Haiku. The summative assessment will be a completed worksheet that includes both their writing process and their completed
Haiku. They will also record audio of them reading their Haiku that will be submitted to me, and they will post their Haiku to
a shared class Padlet page.
Learner Objectives:
a. Using multiple online resources, students will develop understanding about how to write a Haiku.
b. Students will create their own Haiku and publish it on an interactive platform.
Time Frame:
The “Hook” for this lesson is a short video clip from an episode of the children’s animated show, Avatar: The Last Airbender.
In the clip, one of the characters accidentally wanders into a poetry class and ends up in a Haiku battle against the instructor.
It’s a silly, playful clip that is a great way to introduce students to the format.
Process:
This specific assignment will be fully asynchronous/online. Students will begin with instructional material, followed by a
formal formative assessment. Then they will demonstrate their understanding through the creation of a haiku, and a
worksheet covering both the process and final result will be submitted as a summative assessment.
