Five copies of the book Koalas
Sticky notes
White boards and markers
A. The Lesson
1. Introduction: Show the cover of Koalas and tell the students that it is a
nonfiction book that gives readers true information about koalas. Distribute
Koalas and have the students follow along as you read the title and the
name of the author aloud. Point out that the title of this book is also the
topic, or what the whole book is about
What do you notice about how koalas look?
2. Methods:
Introduce Phonetic Spellings and Captions
o Talk about Phonetic spelling in book
Marsupials (pg. 4)
o Talk about captions
Helps describe photos or illustrations (pg. 4)
Read and Discuss Koalas
o Listen to the whisper read
What was something interesting that you read?
Introduce and Model Self-monitoring (read pg.7 and 8)
o What did I just read? For page 7
They have brown or gray fur, ear, arms, and chests
are white. They have big noses…

They are small. Newborns weigh the little more than
human babies. Get up to 30 pounds.

3. Closure: Tell the students that in the next lesson, they will read more
about koalas and talk with their partners to make sure they understand
remember what they read.
