Message from the
Author
You now have in your hands
...what took months of hard work, analysis, research, planning, and
design to create.

This series of e-modules serve as teacher's guide to help teachers to

maximize the use of the English Reading Kit Level 1 Pupil's Assessment
Manual as a supplementary material for teaching Reading through
distance learning. Specifically designed for Grade 2 teachers for the
Fourth Quarter, the lessons and activities are anchored on the Most
Essential Learning Competencies (MELCS) for English set by the
Department of Education.

While these e-learning materials are by-products of my Practicum in

the University of the Philippines Open University as a Bachelor of
Education Studies student, these are, first and foremost, a labor of love
for the Department of Education - particularly to our beloved teachers
who tirelessly work day in and day out to provide quality education to
our students.

It is my fervent hope that these materials will be of great help to our

public school teachers in teaching English at this challenging time of
the pandemic.

Thank you for the privilege to be able to contribute in uplifting the

quality of education in the country through these learning materials.

Padayon!

Your partner in Quality Education,

Roselle

Discussion

Let’s review what vowel sounds are.

Vowel sounds are the principal sounds of a syllable.

These are the A, E, I, O and U sounds.

Some words only have one syllable while some have

more. Usually, a syllable has one core vowel sound with
one consonant sound.

For this lesson, we will focus on the vowel sounds.

There are five vowel sounds in the English Alphabet.

These vowel sounds have long and short sounds.
We will discuss the short vowel sounds for this lesson.

Short vowel sounds are pronounced in a quick manner.

One can compare them with long vowel sounds.

For example,

The word ‘lid’ has a short /i/ sound, while the equivalent
long sound /i:/ produces the word ‘lead.’
The following are words with short vowel sounds:
