Activity Module Three

Light and Optics

CO1. Analyze image formation by mirrors and lenses.

ILO1. Explain how mirrors form images

ILO2. Locate the image produced by a concave and convex mirrors
ILO3. Calculate the refractive power of lenses

Enabling Learning Outcomes:

1. Discuss the different theories on the nature of light.

2. Evaluate the characteristics of mirrors and lenses.
3. Describe the categories of electromagnetic energy within the
electromagnetic spectrum.

Overview
We are aware of the importance of visible light for making observation. We can only see
if there is light. Light makes us see shapes and colors; and identify objects both near and far. For
example, the color of minerals and rocks can help us identify them. Color is determined by the
relative absorbance or reflection of different wavelengths of visible light.
In this module, you will learn about the nature and properties of light, characteristics of
mirrors and lenses and electromagnetic energy within the electromagnetic spectrum.
Access the self-paced learning materials entitled “SPLM #1 Electromagnetic Spectrum,
Properties of Light, SPLM # 2 Reflection and Mirrors and SPLM #3 Refraction and Lenses
together with this module and also uploaded on the google classroom/Moodle Classroom:

Task #1.
A. Direction: Underline the best answer from the given choices for each item. (30 points)
1. Ultraviolet light has (shorter, longer) wavelengths as compared to infrared light.
2. A red flower (reflects, absorbs) red light.
3. X-rays have (higher, lower) energy as compared to visible light.
4. Orange light has a (shorter, longer) wavelength than violet light.
5. Visible light with a wavelength of 550 nm is (Green, Blue).
6. When light bounces off of the surface of a material, it’s (scattering, reflection).
7. In (transmission, diffraction), light passes through a material without being absorbed.
8. (Reflection, Refraction) occurs when light changes direction as it passes into a material.
9. When light bounces off an object in a variety of directions, it’s (scattering, reflection).
10. In (transmission, diffraction), light is bent or spread around an obstacle.
11.-15. In the diagram below, the wavefront is shown as (A, B) while the ray is shown as (A, B).
B. Choose the letter of the best answer from the given choices. (10 points)
1. The length of a complete wave cycle gives
a. Phase b. Frequency
c. Wavelength d. Amplitude
2. The distance traveled by a point on the wave defines
a. Velocity of a wave b. Phase of a wave
c. Motion of a particle d. None of the option
3. Wave velocity formula is given as
a. V=f/λ b. V=f × λ
c. V=f + λ d. V=f-λ
4. Velocity of the wave is measured in
a. m/s2 b. m/s
2
c. m /s d. None of the option
5. Characteristics of a wave are
a. Amplitude b. Frequency
c. Wavelength and velocity d. Options 1,2 and 3
C. Draw and label the parts of a wave. (10 points)
Task #2.
Direction: Solve the following problems. Show your solution. (50 points)
1. You see a 1000 W streetlamp on a distant hill. You measure the apparent brightness of
the streetlamp to be 0.000001 W/m 2. How can you use this information to determine
the distance to the hill? The luminosity of the streetlamp is L = 1000 W = 103 W.
2. Determine the image distance and image height for a 5.00-cm tall object placed 45.0 cm
from a concave mirror having a focal length of 15.0 cm.
3. An inverted image is magnified by 2 when the object is placed 22 cm in front of a
concave mirror. Determine the image distance and the focal length of the mirror.
4. Light strikes a convex mirror parallel to the principal axis. Draw a ray diagram showing
as to where will the light be reflected. (Hint: given choices)
a. towards the focal point of the mirror
b. from the focal point of the mirror
c. through the center of the curvature of the mirror
d. perpendicular to the mirror plane
