CHEMISTRY ASSIGNMENT
GRADE X
Q1: Identify alkanes, alkenes and alkynes from the following hydrocarbons:
Q3: A hydrocarbon molecule has 3 carbon atoms. Write down its molecular
formula if it is an : (a) alkane (b) alkene (c) alkyne. Also draw their structures.
Q4: Draw electron-dot structure of (i) cyclohexane (ii) benzene. Also write their
molecular formula.
Q5: What are isomers. Give any two characteristics of isomers. Draw all the
possible isomers of pentane.
Q6: (a) What is the atomic number of carbon. Write its electronic configuration.
Q7: What is meant by catenation? Name two elements which exhibit the property
of catenation other than carbon.
Q8: Give the molecular formula and structure of ethene and ethyne. Also write
their common names.
Q9: Write the molecular formula and structure of cyclopentane. How many
covalent bonds are there in its molecule?
Q10: Write the molecular formulae of the third and fifth members of homologous
series of carbon compounds represented by the general formula (i) CnH2n- 2 (ii)
CnH2n (iii) CnH2n+2
Q11: Which of the following belong to the same homologous series?
Q13: Explain why can’t carbon either gain or lose electrons to become stable?
Q14: Carbon, Group (14) element in the Periodic Table, is known to form
compounds with many elements. Write an example of a compound formed with (a)
chlorine (Group 17 of Periodic Table) (b) oxygen (Group 16 of Periodic Table).
Q15: C3H6, C4H8 and C5H10 belong to the same homologous series.
Q18: You are given balls and stick model of six carbon atoms and fourteen
hydrogen atoms and sufficient number of sticks. In how many ways one can join
the models of six carbon atoms and fourteen hydrogen atoms to form different
molecules of C6H14. Show by drawing the structures.
(i)Water (ii) Carbon tetrachloride (iii) Oxygen molecule (iv) Carbon dioxide
Q20: Catenation is the ability of an atom to form bonds with other atoms of the
same element. It is exhibited by both carbon and silicon. Compare the ability of
catenation of the two elements. Give reasons.
HOTS ASSIGNMENT
Q1: A solid element X has four electrons in the outermost shell of its atom. An
allotrope Y of this element is used as a dry lubricant in machinery and also in
making pencil leads.
(d) Give one use of allotrope Y (other than lubrication and pencil leads)
Q2: Two organic compounds A and B have the same molecular formula C6H12.
Write the names and structural formulae :
Q3: The solid element A exhibits the property of catenation. It is also present in the
form of a gas B in the air which is utilised by plants in photosynthesis. An
allotrope C of this element is used in glass cutters.
Q5: You are given the following molecular formulae of some hydrocarbons :
C5H8 ; C7H14 ; C6H6 ; C5H10; C7 H12 ; C6H12
(c) Which three formulae represent open chain unsaturated hydrocarbons having
double bonds ?
(d) Which two formulae represent unsaturated hydrocarbons having triple bonds ?
Q6: The general formula of three compounds A, B and C is CnH2n. B has highest
boiling point while C has lowest boiling point.
