Recently I have heard from a reputed well versed exponent of Bajanai Sampradhayam
that these Sampradhaya Bajans were started beforeTWELVE HUNDRED YEARS by
THALAPAKKAM HEREDITARY , and later spread to the south India. Gopala Kavi of
Sornakadu had been to Thalapakkam, and he introduced most of the songs of
Thalapakkam Chinnaiya as well as some of his own songs along with other kavis of
Sornakadu into Sornakadu Sampradhaya Bajanai Padhdhathi. These songs were followed
by Pudukkottai Poojya Sri Gopalakrishna Bhagavathar, known as Appa. These songs
were sung by various Bhagavathars of Sornakadu starting from Venkatnarayana
Bhagavather son of Sri. Rangachar.
During the chola Kingdom, people from many other states and languages lived here, and
conducted bajans in their own languages.
According to the history of Marudhanallur Sathguru Swamigal, his holiness was in the
Peetam for FOURTEEN years. During that period his holiness visited almost all bajans in
south India and his holiness compiled the present Bajans to enable us to sing in all these
launguages.
During the last two hundred years, bajan Bhagavathars have ommitted songs that were in
vogue and substituted other new songs. But in Sornakadu we have been following the
same padhdhathi for more than three hundred years.

Palm leaves
We are having nearly 74
Palm leave. Here we are publishing some. Two hundred years back written by Mookkudi
Sivarama Iyya.
When Maharaja Pratapa Simhan ruled the Chola Empire (circa 18th century A.D.), these
idols were found in a Tank named Haridhra Nathi, at Mannargudi. These idols were then
brought to the King. The King's ministers decided that the idols should be kept in a
Matam or house, and maintained with daily poojas, abisheham etc. done by a vedhic
scholar. They also determined that daily aradhana be conducted by way of Sampradhaya
Bhajans.
Accordingly, the King handed over the idols to Brahma Sri. Harikantam Iyer, a Telugu
Mulakanadu Brahamin, who was working in the kingdom. The King also provided him
with ample manyam for his livelihood and asked him to stay in Sornakadu village. From
that day onwards Lord Rama has been saving this village and the bhakthas, those who
pray him wherever they are.

Brahma Sri.Harikantam Iyer was conducting his dharma and pooja as per the order of the
King. In his old age he wished to hand over this maintenance and pooja of the idols to his
legal heirs. However, he had only one daughter. He searched for a suitable bridegroom
for his daughter. He then found Brahma Sri.Rangam Iyer, a Brahmin with similar
scholarly abilities like him. Brahma Sri.Harikantam Iyer performed his daughter's
marriage with Sri.Rangam Iyer, and asked him to conduct the poojas and aradhana of
Lord Rama there after.
Brahma Sri.Rangam Iyer had three sons and his hereditary (Parampara) has been called
as "Bhagavathar". His eldest son Venkatanarayana Bhagavathar took charge after his
father. From that day onwards the Bhagavathar parampara is managing and conducting
pooja. At present (2007), the ninth parampara is performing the rights. Sri.P.Ramamurthy
Bhagavathar is the present Managing Trustee, and Sri.V.Narasimha Bhagavathar (Murali)
performs the Pooja. (The entire parampara chart (Family Tree) of Bhagavathar family
will soon be published here.)

Uthukadu Venkatasubbaiyer hails from here, according to news published in the Indian
Express. (This reference will be published here soon)
Pudukkottai Poojya Sri.Gopalakrishna Bhagavathar started his Bajan from here. He learnt
Sornakadu Bajan sampradhayam from his brother-in-law Sri.Venkatakrishna Iyer, who
led the Sornakadu Bajan for more than forty years. Poojya Sri.Gopalakrishna
Bhagavathar, Known as "Appa" has included Sornakadu Bajan songs in his daily Bajans
and Kalyana Uthsavam.
Most of the Sornakadu Bajan songs contain the title (mudra) "Gopala." And many people
thought that Appa himself had written these songs. But these were written by the earlier
Gopala Kavi, some 300 years back.
Ramanathapuram Asthan Vidhwan Sri.Meesu Krishna Iyer participated in Sornakadu
Bajans.

After that time, whenever he met anyone from Sornakadu or nearby villages, he usued to
ask about the pooja and Bajan. Around 1970, when I went to Kalavai to meet
paramacharya, he asked me also the same thing. He was very much pleased to hear that
the sampradhaya Bajan and Pooja at Sornakadu were continuing without any deviations.

Two hundred years ago, Sri.Mookkudi Sivarama Iyer wrote down the Sornakadu Bajan
sampradhayam for his personal reference. This was written on palm leaves, in Tamil
Grandha Lipi (script) . About ten years ago, I got these palm leaves from Sri.Ukkadai
Mani Bhagavathar (grandson of Poovathakudi Yechu Bhagavathar), through
Sri.S.Seetharaman, mirasdhar of Sornakadu.
Ever since, I wished to find an appropriate person to read these palm leaves, and publish
this work in Tamil, without any delay. However, I did not get this opportunity until 2005.
I then found that my bajan friend Sri.Adhinarayanan can fluently read Tamil grandha lipi,
and six other Indian languages. In 2006, with the help of Sri.Adhinarayanan and
Mrs.Uma Maheswari (a PhD student in Bajan Sampradhayam at the Kamarajar
University, Madurai), I translated the work, and published the book - "Sornakadu
sampradhaya Bajanai Paddhadhi." The book was released during the 2006 Sri Rama
Navami festival at Sornakadu.
Authorities of Saraswathi Mahal, Thanjavur analyzed the palm leaves, and gave a
certificate of its age. This certificate, the palm leaves, and the printed book will be
published here soon.

At present, the following people conduct the bajans, along with other Bhagavathars:
Sri.S.Seetharaman,
Mirasdhar,
Sornakadu post,
Peravoorani Taluk,
Thanjavur District,
Tamil Nadu, India. Pin Code:614804
Phone : 91-04373-270462.
Cell: 91-0-9442392582.
To start with, Dhyana Slogam has a few small differences compared to other paddhathis.
The following order is followed at Sornakadu - Guru Bodhendhral, Devatha, and then
Nama mahima slogams.
Again in Thodaya Mangalam, the order is a little different. You can find the details of
these differences in the published book (which will also be posted here in a future blog
post).
For Guru Kirthan, only Bodhendral ("sathamani") used to be sung. But now-a-days, we
are sing all the three Gurus.
Vasanthothsavam morning starts with Thirumanjanam, for the abhishekam of the idols,
along with Bajan. This is followed by Nithyothsavam. The entire Geetha govindham is to
be completed at this time. Next come the following, in this order: Tharangam,
Panchapathy, pooja. By this time abishegam, archanai, Vasantha Madhava Pooja is to be
completed by the poojakar. Next is Sankaraga dhyanam. Then comes Jaganatha
pradhatchanam ending with five slogams. Then begins kottanothsavam (Mutthu Kuthal).
Part of the Kottanothsavam are the Sornakadu sampradhaya Keerthanai - "Allo nere
dillo," "suvi rama badhra suvi,"(Muthu Kuthal) and "suvale."(Muthu samarpanai) Then
come Thalantu sobane with "Dhasaratha thanayudu rama" and Chiluka sobane with
"Gana nathuni Mrokki."(Now gingly oil will be given to a couple) All these songs were
written by our ancestor Gopala Kavi.
Churnikai, pravaram, and mangalya Dharanam are not in practice. At present, we have
included Mangalashtagam. After this come Harathi.
For noon meals, "Gandharva raja prathimam" slogam and "Achutha Rama Govindha"
song precede apojanam. This concludes the day time functions of Vasanthothsavam (i.e.
Diva Praharanam Sampoornam).
Vasanthosavam Rathri Praharanam (night functions) starts after night meals . This starts
with Nithyothsavam, "Chandhana charchitha" Geetha Govindham, Tharangam,
Panchapathy, dhyanam, pooja Jaganatha Pradhatchanam up to five slogams and
Namavali.
First thing in the morning is Grama Pradhatchanam: Every house conducts Padha
Prachalanam of Bajan Bhagavathars (i.e. cleaning of Bhagavathars feet with water), and
the head of the house gives Thambulam (i.e., betel nut, leaf and Coconut) to the Bajan
Bhagavathars.
The Bajan Bhagavathars enter the Bajanai Matam with the thambulams in hand, and
place them in the center of the matam, in front of the sanctum sanctorum. Then, they
continue with the Jaganatha Pradhatchanam, from "Dharo jaganatha dharo hare,"
Vairagya Prarthana songs, and "Rathna Jaditha" Prarthana Abangam. This part concludes
with namaskaram by everyone.
Then everyone sits down. The pradhana Bhagavathar takes one thambulam with two
coconuts in his hand. The Poojakar sits in front of him. The Bhagavathars sing
"Narasimha Nammithi,"
written by Gopala Kavi. At the completion of this song, thambulam is given to the
poojakar.

The person doing pooja should have undergone Manthra upadhesam, and Sakthi
Panchakshari
is a must. During the festival days, he should not take meals. On the afternoon of
Anjaneya uthsavam, Bajan Bhagavathars take their meals and then offer asirvadham (to
pujakar, and others).
During Naivedhyam, a separate banana leaf is placed in front of the sanctum sanctorum,
and food is served. The poojakar takes his meals from this serving, after the asirvadham.
The poojakar should conduct daily saligrama abishekam, archanai and naivedhyam.
The abishekam of idols takes nearly three hours. On the night of Vasanthosavam, the
idols are covered with sandal paste.

After completion of grama pradhakshanam, the poojakar takes bath, and then performs
saligrama abishekam and Anjaneya Sahasranamam.
At Sornakadu, the tradition does not include adorning with vadai garland, only
samarpanai.
In this blog I have explained the ancient paddhathi of Sornakadu within my limit. I learnt
these details from my paternal uncle Late Sri.S.Sethurama Iyer of Arasarkulam. I request
you all to encourage me with your blessings.
