ML Video Teaching Reflection Mikaela Bradley MUSE258

My planning for this peer teaching assignment went relatively smoothly. I had a pretty

good idea of what I wanted to do within the parameters. I changed things quite a few times and

tried to make sure I had enough time to get the video done and be able to go through it a few

times to get the best take. I also sort of based it off of doing the opposite of my Music Literacy

teaching- where I did minor tonality with simple meter- so I did major tonality with compound

meter (InTASC #4). I also tried to keep in mind that I need to be able to support students at all

levels of music literacy development (InTASC #7).

I practiced it a few times alone in my room to try and make sure I could go through it

smoothly. Ultimately, I still stumbled a lot because I was nervous and so it wasn’t as smooth as I

would have liked. I practiced it through once with my “student” Alaina right before starting my

recording, and it helped a lot. I had done a few runs as a student for her and I learned a lot

through observation as well (InTASC #9). I think that the recording I submitted was by far the

best take, but I was focusing so much on the content that I didn’t move around as much as I

wanted to. I haven’t gotten used to moving around while teaching. Moving around with a real

group of students would allow me to better asses them in real time during the lesson (InTASC

#6).

Feeling comfortable moving while talking and teaching is something I definitely need to

work on. So far I have only slightly improved and it doesn’t really show in the video. I was

pretty much glued to my lesson plan and the computer. My strengths were in my planning,

preparation, and practice for the most part. My “performance” was definitely one of the better

ones I have given so I am trying to give myself credit for that. I also think I did the rhythm and

tonal echoing very well even though I did stumble a few times. I also think that I was able to

remain positive and encouraging throughout the lesson and tried to engage more with my student

(InTASC #3). I am generally proud of how the lesson went!
