HAVE FEWER COVID DEATHS

NEW research has found that the number of COVID deaths is lower in countries where
people trust each other more.
Researchers from the University of Exeter compared the number of COVID-19 deaths worldwide with
the number of people in each country who agreed with the statement: “most people can be trusted.”
Countries where lots of people agreed, such as China and Finland, saw fewer deaths caused by
COVID-19.
It was also found that more trusting nations usually saw a faster fall in infections and deaths.
The researchers said that countries needed at least 40% of people to trust one another to see
a reduction in cases and deaths. Levels of trust in the UK are at exactly 40%.
Professor Tim Lenton, who ran the study, said: “Building trust within communities should be a long-
term project for all nations because this will help them cope with future pandemics and other
challenges such as extreme events caused by climate change.”

THE WEEK
I think this series is the hardest because people are catching onto what our
strong points are. I always listen to the voice, Jonathan and Mo are so strong
on the comedy side of things, and Davina knows everyone! It’s hard for me now
because they’re adjusting their accents and their singing voices, which is what
I always rely on.

HELPING

SCHOOL
CHILDREN
THE charity Mary’s Meals feeds more than two million hungry children
all over the world, by offering them a meal in school every single
day – giving youngsters the energy to learn and the opportunity to
thrive. The charity wrote this to show how one UK school has been
supporting it, and spoke to some of the children that it’s helping.

THANKS TO A SUPER SCHOOL LIFE AT PRIMARY SCHOOL IN ZAMBIA

In 2020, the pupils and staff at Ridgeway Farm CE Primary School in Swindon Zambia is a landlocked (has no coast) country in southern Africa that

siblings receive from Mary’s Meals in school each day is a lifeline – on some
days it’s the only food they eat.
Mary says: “After my parents died, I wanted to go to school to be with my friends
and to learn. I was very happy to start school. The best thing about school is
being able to learn. My favourite subjects are maths and English.”
Pupils from Ridgeway Farm CE Primary School in
Swindon raised £4,066 for Mary’s Meals by running 5km “I want to be a nurse when I’m older. I want to build a house for my grandmother
and to have enough food for my brother and me.”

GET TO KNOW MARY’S MEALS

Mary’s Meals started its school feeding programme in two schools in
Malawi at the end of 2002, serving around 200 children with daily meals
while they learned.
Mary’s Meals now feeds two million children in 20 countries, including
Yemen, Malawi, Liberia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Haiti, Kenya, India, South
Sudan and many more.
On average, it costs just £15.90 to feed a child with Mary’s Meals for
a whole school year.
Until the end of January, all donations made to Mary’s Meals will be
doubled, up to £1.6 million, thanks to a group of generous supporters!

There are lots of ways you can support Mary’s Meals, including fundraising, donating or taking part in the
charity’s Move For Meals challenge. Find out more at marysmeals.org.uk/doublethelove/ways-to-get-involved
