A critically endangered Visayan
warty pig has been born at Chester
Zoo. Visayan warty pigs are one of
the rarest species in the world, with
only an estimated 200 animals left
in the wild. Chester Zoo has been
working with conservationists in the
Philippines, where the pigs come
from, to help bring the species
back from the brink of extinction.
PREHISTORIC PRINTS
Researchers believe that dinosaur
footprints found on a beach in
Wales are more than 200 million
years old. The prints were found in
Penarth, in the Vale of Glamorgan,
in 2020 and have been studied by
a team of palaeontologists from
universities and museums in the
UK and France. It’s believed they
belonged to an early relative of
the diplodocus and are from the
Triassic era.

South Africa, has died aged 90.
Apartheid was a racist system
in South Africa that favoured
white people and lasted from
1948 until 1991. Archbishop Tutu,
along with others including
ex-president Nelson Mandela,
helped to bring the system to
an end. At the archbishop’s
funeral, current president Cyril
Ramaphosa said Tutu was a
“crusader for freedom, equality
and peace, not only in South

Konnie Huq
CHILDREN’S author and former Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq has helped to launch the new
Give-Back January campaign from Recycle Your Electricals.
The campaign aims to encourage people to
donate or recycle their unwanted electrical items,
instead of keeping them stashed away at home or
throwing them in the bin.
Research for the campaign has revealed that UK
households throw away enough Christmas lights
to circle the Earth 12 times!

FRENCH car adverts will have to promote
cycling alongside the use of cars from 2022,
in a bid to help the environment.
The French government wants car companies to
include messages about using alternative modes
of transport, as part of its plans to tackle CO2
emissions and climate change.
The ads must feature one of three messages:
encourage people to cycle or walk instead of
drive where possible; use public transport; or
“consider carpooling”, which is when people
share a car with others.
The new rules will apply to all media adverts,
including those in newspapers, on the radio or
the internet. The messaging must also include
the hashtag “#SeDeplacerMoinsPolluer”, which
means ‘Move and Pollute Less’.

THE UK has experienced its hottest New Year’s
Eve and New Year’s Day on record.
The highest temperature on 31 December 2021 was
recorded in Bala in Wales, where it reached a balmy
16.5°C. Kinlochewe in Scotland reached a high of 16.1°C.
New Year’s Day also saw very mild weather, with 16.3°C
recorded at St James’s Park in London. That beats the
previous record of 15.6°C set in Bude, Cornwall, in 1916.

A STUDY of 21 schools in Zurich, Switzerland,
has found that lockdowns helped kids to sleep
better and drink less caffeine.
Researchers looked at how school closures during the
pandemic affected young people, in particular their
sleeping patterns, health-related quality of life and
substance use (such as caffeine).
They found that, during lockdown, students slept 75
minutes longer than usual and reported a better
quality of life as a result. They also consumed less
caffeine but used more digital media.

WE took a group of First News readers and FYI viewers from all around the UK to meet Nadhim Zahawi, the Secretary of State for Education, for
the start of the new school term. They weren’t afraid to ask some tough questions, from making sure kids get healthy school meals to how the
Government plans to look out for young people’s mental health. Here’s what he had to say…
Gavriella: I’m from Bite Back [which campaigns for
healthy food for young people]. We’ve talked to lots
of young people about their experiences of school
food. We found out that lots of schools are serving
unhealthy snacks like crisps and sweets without
providing healthy, affordable options. What is the
Government going to do to ensure that all schools
provide healthy and delicious food for everyone?
Nadhim Zahawi: It’s a really great question. The rules
are in place that it is mandatory for schools to serve
hot, nutritious meals and to think about the nutritious
value of the food they’re serving. But how do we
make that a reality? I think the way you do it is by
demonstrating to school staff, leaders and those who
brilliantly cook and serve school food what ‘good’
looks like and showing them how they can deliver
that. So it’s about sharing all the good things that
really good school kitchens are delivering. [Mr Zahawi
said he was planning a meeting with TV chef Jamie
Oliver, who founded Gavriella’s Bite Back campaign
to make healthy food accessible to all children].
I’m going to meet with him to see how we can
achieve that, so it’s really about translating the
rules into reality.
Anabia: Don’t you think the curriculum is a bit
outdated to prepare us for the world of work today?
NZ: What we try and do is make sure that the
curriculum is always current and does prepare
young people for the world of work. One of the things
I want to do is help young people understand there

are different opportunities. You can do your GCSEs,
A Levels and then go on to university, or you can
choose a different path. You could do T Levels, which
is a combination of an A Level and an apprenticeship
where you learn a particular skill. Our economy is
changing so quickly that we have to make sure
young people have the ability to learn new skills.
If you think about climate change, we’re going to
need lots more people doing things like being able
to be an electrician. It’s really important work being
able to build the houses of the future that will be net
zero. So we’re trying to bring businesses into schools,
those brilliant companies that can help us design
the skills of the future, to make sure young people
get the career advice they need to learn about
different skills.
Canaan: What more can be done to help children
struggling with mental health?
NZ: Canaan, it’s a really important question. The
children’s commissioner [Rachel de Souza] did a
survey called The Big Ask and half a million young
people took part. One of the most important things
they said is: “We want to be back at school.” Being out
of school because of COVID-19 made them unhappy,

uncomfortable and affected their mental health.
So the most important thing for me is to protect
education, to make sure that children are in school
learning. They also said they valued mental health
support, both face to face and online. We’re spending
almost £80m on mental health support teams in
schools. We’ve got a really ambitious mental health
support strategy across the whole of Government,
not just in education, where we’re looking to support
345,000 young people with mental health needs and
it’s important that we really listen to the voice of young
people when we design that support.

Emmeline: Do you think tests and exams are
affecting children’s mental health in a negative way?
NZ: I think exams are really important, but I think
we also have to recognise that young people have

been really resilient [able to recover]. But we need to
understand that they’ve had gaps in their learning
because of COVID, where we’ve had to move towards
online learning. So I think it’s a balance.
Aden: How can we do more to prevent bullying, both
in school and online?

that they can talk about it, whether it’s to your
teacher, a parent or a friend. I faced bullying when
I went to school and that was pretty traumatic and
painful for me. Online, we need to make sure we
work with the big online platforms and hold them to
account. The digital platforms have a duty of care
and must take some responsibility as well to deal
with this issue.

Malachi: How can schools be helped to be
more sustainable?
NZ: We’re building about 500 schools over the next ten
years and they will have to be net zero in operation.
There’s some really great technology now that can
help to deliver that. We’re also making sure that in
lessons like STEM and science lessons in geography
and citizenship, we have really high-quality resources
for teachers to teach about climate change.
Malachi: Should children prepare for SATs, focus on
the core subjects or carry on learning foundation
subjects such as science and history?
NZ: I think they need to continue to learn about
science and history, as well as the core subjects. The
thing I’m concerned about is the gap [in learning
due to COVID-19]. We need to make sure we offer
as much support to children, young people with
SATs and of course, with GCSEs and A Levels as well
to recognise that there’s been this gap. But I think
it’s important that we cover things like history and
science as well.
Emmeline: How do you work with the education
ministers in Scotland and Wales, and do you
ever disagree?
NZ: We work very closely and I’m very proud that
when I was the vaccines minister, I was able to make
sure that I worked closely with the health ministers in
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. I plan to do the
same in education as well.
Aden: Some teachers work hard to make learning
fun. Are there any plans to increase teacher’s pay?
NZ: We are making sure that we get a good
settlement to make sure teachers are paid well
and that we reach what we promised. We made
a promise in our manifesto [list of plans] that the
starting salary for teachers will get to £30,000 a year
and I plan to make sure I deliver on that. And, of
course, we had a very good settlement in the budget
from Rishi Sunak to continue investing in education.
Emmeline: I was looking at the photos of your
current team and the previous education
secretaries in the waiting room downstairs and
I couldn’t help but notice they were mostly male…
NZ: You’re right. I do think we need to get to a 50/50
[equal numbers of men and women] in Parliament.
We need to make it more diverse too. I think if people
come from different backgrounds, then they’ll make
better decisions as a team. That’s certainly been my
experience throughout my whole life.
