5. Pack a bag
Pack a small overnight bag containing
the essentials for each member of
your family and keep them tucked
away in the boot of your car. That way
if you are heading to see friends or
relatives over the Christmas period and
decide to stay overnight at the last
minute, you’ll be grateful for your own
sleepwear and toothbrush!
7. Meals in minutes
At The Christmas Magazine, we love

you can always serve a home cooked

dd a bit of cheer to your sofa with
a cute festive cushion! If you have
a Cricut™ machine, you'll find it
easy to cut intricate shapes in no time.
Otherwise, you might find it easier to stick
to more simple outlines.
STEP 1
Cut a piece of 102cm x 43cm fabric.
Find the centre point and add whatever
adornment you'd like to the cushion
front, making sure your design doesn't
extend beyond 30cm square. I chose to
cut a design from iron-on vinyl with my
Cricut machine and embellish with hand
embroidery, but you may prefer to cut a
design from fabric that has been attached sew across the top and bottom edges,

ollow this project to discover how to
make these cracker crowns for your
Christmas lunch. Not only are they
much more attractive than the traditional
kind, but you can reuse them each year!
I used my Cricut™ machine to cut quite
intricate decorations, but you could cut
simpler adornments by hand.
STEP 1
Start by cutting the hat shapes from the
felt. You'll need to cut strips measuring
30cm x 10cm, then add a zig-zag edge
to the top. You can do this by hand, or
if you have a Cricut machine, you can
type ‘Cracker hats’ into ‘Projects’ for your
outline shape.
STEP 2
Now it’s time to decorate the felt crowns:
I like to cut shapes or letters from iron-on
vinyl with my Cricut machine. Or you can
use fabric and cut by hand. You'll find it
easier to add stabiliser to the back of the
fabric first. Attach your embellishments to
the crown using a Cricut EasyPress, glue or
stitching.
STEP 3
Sew a length of ribbon to each end.

TOADSTOOLS
YOU WILL NEED
• Half an empty walnut shell
• Twig
• Glue gun and glue sticks
• Secateurs
TOP TIP
Separating the two halves of the walnut shell is relatively easy, but care must be
taken as it requires the use of a sharp knife. Carefully insert the tip of the knife into
the walnut at the stalk end and wiggle it to start to break the shell seal. Remove the
knife and turn the nut, before reinserting the tip of the knife and wiggling the knife away
from the stalk position in the opposite direction. Remove the knife and now insert the blade of
the knife into the two openings made. Use gentle and even pressure to gradually work the knife
into the nut until the two halves separate. Remove all the nut from within each half using the tip
of the knife. Older walnuts are easier to open than very fresh ones.
TOP TIP
Scale the toadstools down using
acorn caps and thinner twigs and
use these smaller toadstools to make
miniature versions, as seen in the
mouse decoration. You could even try
scaling up the idea to create bigger
pieces using toadstools made from
sections of a branch topped with
halved coconut shells, for example.
