HOW ENERGY IS BEING

HARNESSED FROM
HYDROTHERMAL
(GROUP 1)

1. How source works?

A hydroelectric power plant converts the kinetic energy into electricity by making water at a
dam pass through a propeller-like piece called hydraulic turbine. A power source is used to turn
the turbine, which then turns a metal shaft in an electric generator, (the motor that produces
electricity). Water exits the turbine and is returned to a stream or riverbed below the dam.

2. Process flow

The theory is to build a dam on a large river that has a large drop in elevation. The dam stores
lots of water behind it in the reservoir. Near the bottom of the dam wall there is the water
intake. Gravity causes it to fall through the penstock inside the dam. At the end of the penstock
there is a turbine propeller, which is turned by the moving water. The shaft from the turbine
goes up into the generator, which produces the power. Power lines are connected to the
generator that carry electricity to your home and mine. The water continues past the propeller
through the tailrace into the
river past the dam.

4. Discussion

Hydrothermal energy is the process of obtaining heat or energy from a large body of water.
Hydroelectricity is created by the force of moving water. The name comes from hydro, the
Greek word for water. Hydroelectric power plants are usually located in dams that
impound rivers, thereby raising the level of the water behind the dam and creating as high a
head as is feasible.
