Introduction

• Several factors which include robustness, low cost and low maintenance have
made induction motor popular for industrial applications compared to dc motor.

• Due to fast development in power semiconductor devices and their controller,

the induction motor drives find wide applications in variable speed drives which
almost replaced the dc drives.
Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM)
• PWM pulse can be generated by
comparing a triangular wave with
sinusoidal reference signal and the pulse
width are proportionally varied to the
amplitude of a sinusoidal reference signal
evaluated at the center of the same pulse.

• Fig.1 explains the generation of a

sinusoidal PWM signal. Fig.1
Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM)
• The fundamental frequency component in the inverter output voltage can be controlled by
amplitude modulation index,
Vm
Ma = (1)
VCr

• The amplitude modulation index Ma is usually adjusted by varying Vm while keeping Vcr fixed.
The frequency modulation index,
fcr
𝑀f = (2)
fm
• The output freq. of the Inverter can be found by using the frequency of the sinusoidal
reference signal. Modulation index is controlled by peak amplitude of sinusoidal reference
signal and these modulation index M can be controlled RMS voltage of inverter output.
V/F Control Method

• Volt/Hz technique is the simplest controller technique.

• Volt/Hz technique is the most common method of speed control of an IM.

• The torque created by the IM is specifically corresponding to the Volt/Hz ratio.

• The voltage and frequency are attempted to fluctuate, keeping their proportion
consistent, at that point the Torque created by IM will stay steady for all the speed.

• The scalar control technique depends on differing two parameters all the while.
V/F Control Method

• The speed can be shifted by increase or decrease the input frequency, but this results in
change of impedances will change. The change of impedances eventuates the increase
or decrease of current. If the current is small, the torque of motor decreases.

• If the voltage increases or the frequency decreases, the coils can be saturation or burned
can occur in the coils.

• To keep away from these issues, it is important to shift the frequency and the voltage at
the same time.
