Debate 2022 – Topic: “Subliminal advertisement is immoral”

Kyla: I certainly believe that Subliminal advertisement is

considered to be . First and foremost, I am going to define what
is subliminal advertisement. Subliminal Messages in Advertising
Are A Violation of Free Will Most professionals believe that
subliminal is unethical because it takes away free will and
discredits the power of choice that the customer has. In 1957, an
advertising executive from New Jersey announced that he had
convinced moviegoers at a local theater to buy more popcorn using
subliminal messaging. He claimed that 45,000 moviegoers we’re
exposed to flashes of the words “Eat Popcorn & Drink Coca Cola”
on screen during a movie – with the words appearing and
disappearing so quickly that viewers weren’t even aware they
we’re there. And as a result, popcorn increased and average of
57.5% and coke sales increased 18.1% For instance, when you watch
TV commercial or a product instore, as a shopper you have the
choice to evaluate and compare several alternatives without any
bias. You gauge the benefits of each (brand saliency play a very
important part here) and arrive at decision to buy the product or
not. But subliminal messages try to influence that decision making
through gaining an unfair advantage. Since the message is not in
your face and obvious, customers are unconsciously drawn towards
making a choice they are not even aware of. It is intended to
produce information that the viewer is not aware he/she is
receiving, has been ruled as not protected by the First Amendment.
The Subliminal advertising is immoral since it belongs to the
category of deceptive and unfair

Kristine: Subliminal Advertising By one definition, it is: "The

use by advertisers of images and sounds to influence consumers'
responses without their being consciously aware of it." Subliminal
advertising conveys hidden messages of which viewers are not
consciously aware. This ad strategy poses serious ethical issues,
particularly because subliminal ads can manipulate consumer
behavior even when consumers aren't making a conscious choice and
aren't aware of what they've seen. -Some subliminal ads cater to
unethical desires or inappropriately target a particular
market. ... Other advertisers might use inappropriate sexual
messages. This can undermine a consumer's conscious values,
promote unethical behavior or increase a consumer's desire to
engage in an unhealthy or risky practice. According to FCC
STATEMENT they stated that all broadcasting licensees should not
use subliminal advertising techniques because the techniques are
DECEPTIVE,

There are plenty of reasons why subliminal advertising is immoral

Firstly, people should not be subjected to stimuli they cannot

consent to. With regular advertising, people have the choice to
look at it or turn away from it. With subliminal messages, that
choice is not given.
Secondly, the effects of subliminal stimuli on human beings is not
known. It isn’t even truly known if it even works at all or if
there are unknown side effects to a human’s brain or psychology.

Possible questions: Is subliminal advertising illegal?

(ANYONE CAN ASNWER THE POSSILE QUESTIONS THAT’LL BE THROWN TO US,
UNLESS YOUR NAME IS CALLED.)

Sittie: Today, the use of subliminal messaging is banned in many

countries. Unsurprisingly, the United States does not expressly
forbid the use of subliminal messages in advertisements, though
their use does fall under federal law enforcement jurisdiction.
While Australia and the U.K have laws against it.

Possible question: Does subliminal advertising works support your

view?

In reality, no one knows for sure. A lot of people will tell you
that it doesn’t, just as many people will tell you that
commercials never persuade them, despite the fact that it’s a
multi-billion-pound worldwide industry that dates back to the 15th
century. People don’t like to be manipulated, and they don’t
want to feel as if they don’t have a lot of control over their
choices.

Possible question: What are the benefits of subliminal

advertisement?

Subliminal advertising, like most forms of advertising, has its

own set of advantages. Unfortunately, because of what’s seen on
TV, spoken about on social media, or written about in
publications, it’s gotten a bad rap. Subliminal advertising, on
the other hand, can simply assist an audience in understanding the
information the commercial is trying to express when employed
effectively.
Subliminal advertising has the advantage of being able to help an
ad, logo, or other piece of marketing appeal to a target audience
without being intrusive.
Possible question: What is the effect of subliminal messages on
behavior in a real world setting?
Subliminal cues have been shown to influence judgments and
attitudes, but this does not necessarily imply that they will have
an impact on people's overt actions. Indeed, a large body of
research in social psychology has shown that there is
significantly less correlation between, say, attitudes and
behaviors than one might assume. The issue of subliminal
advertising and persuasion, which fall under this category, is
likewise more contentious when it comes to the effects of
subliminal stimuli on behavior.
