Anticipatory Set:

"We have been working a lot on addition. Now we are going to move onto something called

subtraction! There will be a paper in your mailbox that will go home with you. It just tells your
parents that we are beginning subtraction."

Activity/Procedures:

Subtraction Worksheet
- First thing I will do is ask them to get their names on their papers, and give me a thumbs up

when they have it done.

- Show students different examples of ways to represent subtraction (story problem,

equation, count on fingers, 5s frame).

- Remind them that when we subtract we always have to take from the bigger number (so

the bigger number comes first).

- Go around and check that everyone has that side completed, and turn the page over.
- Guide them through filling in the blanks (adding in the numbers and the "-" sign).
- Call on students, asking them what number goes in each blank, and what sign goes in the

opening.

Differentiation:

Manipulatives will be provided for students who are having a difficult time understanding the

concept of subtraction. I would have them use unifix cubes to represent the subtraction

problems.
I will also be sure to keep an extra eye on my students who like to get off task. I will do this

by staying in close proximity to them.
