Goal 4/ Part 1

1. List 5 ways to encourage family involvement in the early learning center:


a. Making a class blog or Google Classroom that the parents can get on with their
child that includes website links, articles, and videos that give examples of
activities they can do with their child one-on-one and as a family. It can also
include information about what is going on in the class and opportunities for
family members to help out their child and their class such as helping with
classroom decorations for a holiday.
b. Holding a family fun day, preferably on a weekend, held by the early learning
center and including food and family oriented games or activities that everyone
can participate in.
c. Offering volunteer opportunities for family members to participate in when
possible such as being a chaperone on a field-trip or assisting with set-up for
family fun-days run by the early learning center.
d. Having family members come in and read a story to their child’s children.
e. Creating a “Family Member” show-and-tell day where the family members
talk about themselves and share a craft or skill with the children.
2. Describe 3 ways that a teacher can support a child's relationship with his/her family:
a. Giving assignments that require them to get to know their family such as
making a Family Tree that includes at least one like and dislike from each family
member they include.
b. Providing them with at-home activity packets to do with a family member that
requires teamwork and tells the adults in the family how to make family time
through those activities and other examples or website resources they can use.
c. Making a quick and easy pick-up or drop-off activity that the parent can do
with the child if they have time before they leave, such as making a short and
simple “super-secret family handshake” that they can do every day.
3. Describe at least 6 possible combinations that represent the American family:
a. Families where in the child(ren) live(s) with their immediate and extended
family members such as both parents and a set of grandparents
b. Families of single-moms or single-dads with one or more children
c. Families where the child(ren’s) guardians are their grandparents or their
parents’ sibling(s)
d. Adoptive families; can be a single adult or a married couple who may or may
not be blood-related adopting one or more children
e. Blended families; ie. families with a couple and their children from their
current and all other previous relationships
f. Bilingual/Biracial/Mutiracial families where you have parents from two or
more different racial backgrounds and cultures mixed into one family
4. Describe 5 activities that reinforce the family:
a. Family game nights
b. Holding regular family meetings
c. Creating family traditions
d. Going on a family trip such as going camping
e. Doing chores like cooking together
