BEDFORDSHIRE COUNTY JUNIOR GIRLS COACHING ACADEMY

Bedfordshire Golf Club hosted the 2nd monthly session on the 24th April (5 planned for 2022) for girls who already play or
have an interest in beginning their golfing journey.
Head professionals Richard Banks & Steve Connolly, with the help of Jo Mundy, set up 3 stations for the girls. The 90
minute session was designed to improve their; putting skills, shot selection around the green and how to practice effectively
on the driving range. We had 17 girls of mixed abilities who enjoyed a get together and some fun challenges…. plus a bowl
of chips afterwards! County Junior Girl's Co-ordinator, Fidelma Gordon, commented "It was such a great day. The girls
really enjoyed it. Pros were great. Set up brilliantly". More than golf it brings girls together to make life-long
friends was how our General Manager, Glenn Raynes put it.
Next session is on Sunday 22nd May. For more information please contact girlsgolf@bedsgolfunion.org.uk.

News from our Clubs From Bedford and County Golf Club

For the first time all 4 Captains at Bedford & County –

Seniors, Ladies, Men’s and Juniors’ - had a drive in on the
same day – followed by a competition to launch the Men’s
and Ladies’ Captains charities. It was quite nerve racking,
with lots of distracting noise from the watching members,
but the Captains were all smiles before the event.

Members guessed how far each Captain might drive and

the monies raised were divided between the winner in each
category and the Charities.

Elaine in action Elaine has chosen a locally

charity to support for her year
and welcomed Beccy Campbell-
Grieve, Manager of Project 229,
to the day’s events.

This organisation, based in Kempston, run, host and support the start-up of
services to meet the needs of local people. Services range from crisis
support all the way through to which empower people to counter isolation,
build relationships, resilience, develop life-skills, be supported / support
others, grow in self-esteem, make positive changes and feel more part of
the community.

The competition was a mixed 4 ball Betterball event with some very
impressive scores. Shaun Staplehurst and Mandy Martin came in
with 49 points but, unbelievably were beaten on countback, by David
and Joe Toes, who also had 49 points.

April 2nd would see County Captain, Claire Cummings, at

Bedford & County for a County fixture against
Leicestershire. Claire had celebrated a special birthday in
March, and this was the first time she had seen her County
colleagues who, unbeknown to her, had a surprised
planned for her. She would come in to find the dining
room suitably decorated and enjoy champagne and cake.

Belated Happy Birthday Claire.

From Bedfordshire Golf Club

A Spring Coffee Morning in aid of the Ladies’ Captain’s charity, FACES (supporting local families), as well as the
Ladies’ section, raised over £600 on Tuesday 26th April: huge thanks from Sue and from FACES to everyone who
supported this event. FACES Bedford works with families to build a better future, and Sue was delighted to invite Amy
from FACES to chat with the ladies at Bedfordshire GC and to raise awareness of their amazing work: more details can
be seen on their website https://facesbedford.org
It was fabulous to have a bar and lounge full of ladies enjoying coffee, chatter
and delicious cakes alongside the well-supported raffle which raised £400 alone
with generous prizes from local business, the invited stall-holders and from our
own founding member of the PGA - pro Denise Hastings. Special thanks to the
stall-holders for donating a percentage of sales to FACES…Tropic skincare (the
free hand scrubs were amazing), Moochimoo selling very popular clothes and
accessories and Miranda May - beautifully scented handmade candles, hand-
poured into copper or glass and with wooden wicks: the bluebell ones were our
favourites. Some of our Ladies welcoming committee pictured below.

The morning was followed by an academy course game for the ladies of both courses: we are running monthly
roll up and play “nifty nine” games to mix and meet on the Academy course – much enjoyed by all – usually just
counting putts to take any pressure off newer players. With several new members gaining their first handicaps,
we are also about to have our first short 4-hole competition…to be followed by a Texas scramble, mixing new
and experienced players for bit of fun and an introduction to different types of competition.

Member Focus: Easter Competition winner AND Spring

Coffee Morning fundraiser winner Jenny King. Jenny is
delighted to have two recent wins - firstly in the Easter fun
competition scoring an eggstraordinary 56 points! However
this did include double points on the four Par 3s plus on a
joker hole, cleverly chosen … she was closely followed by a
54 and three 53s with the fairways running beautifully and the
weather being kind. Jenny also won an amazing cake at the
Coffee Morning … the closest guess to the number of sweets
on (on in!) the cake. The pictures show Jenny with her
winner’s Easter Egg and with the Treasure Chest cake she
won with its inventive creator Sue Ives – luckily Jenny is an
experienced and keen triathlete and will soon burn off the
calories – especially since she’s training to swim the full
length of the 7 mile Ullswater Lake in July! It’s the second
largest lake in the Lake District and was scooped out by a
glacier: let’s hope it’s warmed up since then for Jenny’s
upcoming feat!

Cainhoe St Georges Day event 23/4/2022
On a cold and blustery Saturday Cainhoe Wood Golf Club held a fun competition to raise funds for the Junior Section.
The day was very well attended with over 90 players raring to go. All were encouraged to wear red and white and prizes
were awarded for the best team and individual costumes. The format was a happy and relaxed Florida Scramble followed
by a buffet meal. A massively successful day with over £2000 raised. Some of these funds will go towards helping
underprivileged Junior golfers with lessons and equipment. Special thanks to all the organisers.

FROM MILLBROOK GOLF CLUB

Saturday 16th April Helen Masters and Val Freed played the second round
of the Daily Mail Foursomes at Bedfordshire Golf Club. It was a lovely
sunny day and our playing partners Dot and Toni were very nice to go
round with. Unfortunately Helen and I lost the match but we had a lovely
time and enjoyed a well earned drink afterwards on the balcony of the
clubhouse in the sunshine.

Easter Sunday 17th April we played the first major of the year The
Masters Mixed Major Trophy, the format is a mixed betterball. Again it
was a lovely sunny day and we teed off at 10.00am. It was an enjoyable
game and we all appreciated a welcoming drink in the clubhouse
afterwards where Chris (Asst Pro) presented the winners with their
trophy. Congratulations to the winners Monica Miles Stanley and Rob
Impey, second was Helen and Paul Masters and third Val and Malcolm
Freed.

We have had a good response to our Girls Golf Rocks Taster session on
the 7th May and the six week coaching sessions that start on the 21st May
which we are looking forward to hosting.

was an individual stableford and off course with all holiday golf it was full handicap allowance!! The winner was Marina
