This specific apple/android app includes 6 mini games that target all 3 of the
lower-order thinking levels in regards to Bloom’s taxonomy, and it’s a perfect
match for my chosen grade level, content area, and correlating common core
standard!
Sight words are words in the English language that do not have a simple one-to-one
correspondence between sounds and written letters, and therefore have to be learned “by
sight.” Being able to quickly recognize and identify sight words is a crucial part of learning how
to read. This application does a fabulous job at helping beginning readers discover, memorize,
and practice identifying and applying all 220 sight words from the popular Dolch list (plus 94
extra nouns!). There is a grand total of six fun educational games through which children can
acquire mastery over this targeted standard and subject matter, including; Word Machine,
Spelling, Bingo, Memory game, Gears, and Flash Cards. Each game is clarified with spoken
instructions and feedback is given when a wrong answer is selected. Difficulty levels range from
pre-K to 3rd grade, and there are plenty of opportunities for differentiation. The grade level
categories and word selection can be customized and modified in the settings. For example, the
pre-K word list does not include words longer than 3 letters and you can choose specific words
for students to learn, practice, and work with while they play. Letter-case can be selected
directly from the main menu so students have the choice of working with capitalized words and
uppercase or lowercase letters. The app’s interface is refreshingly simple and easy to navigate,
and the overall look is down right adorable! Additional support and useful information for this
app can be accessed from this supporting web page.
REMEMBERING
The Flash Cards mini game featured in
this app is a great tool for memory recall
and discovery learning. Students can
become acquainted with all 220 sight words
from the popular Dolch list as well as 94
additional nouns by drilling themselves with
these exciting flashcards. Students will begin
to zip through the words they already know,
and when they feel stuck they can tap on
each individual card to hear the sight word
pronounced again and again! To generate
customized flashcards and wordlists for
students to practice with, simply go to
settings and select the specific words you
would like to include. Watch each student’s
confidence swell as they become more and
more familiar with each word as they study!
g
These three mini games take learning
sight words to the next level! Each of these
games allows students to experiment and
work with sight words in a vibrant new
setting. To level up in these games, they
must not only be able to recognize the sight
words they have learned, but also identify,
categorize, and distinguish them from the
others. This involves much more cognitive
effort and a higher level of understanding
from students. Here is a brief overview of the
skills students practice in each game:
Gears- Distinguishing
Bingo- Categorizing
Word Machine- Identifying
applying
These two mini games allow students to
apply their newfound knowledge and give it a
real purpose! Both games require students to
practice recalling information, identifying and
distinguishing different words and sounds, and
now, constructing the actual sight words and
nouns themselves! Learning to sound out letters
and spell words is a crucial part in learning how
to read fluently. It’s safe to say that between all
six of the mini games highlighted within this first
half of my presentation, this app has the whole
package! Consider these sight words mastered!

How can this app help students analyze in the
classroom?
Popplet is a wonderful mind mapping application. Mind maps
act as visual brainstorming tools that help students better
comprehend, recall, organize, analyze, and generate new ideas.
Popplet allows students to beautifully capture all sorts of facts,
thoughts, and images and practice creating relationships between
them. Popplet is accessible on all iPads, iPhones, and on the web so
students can seamlessly work on projects in the classroom and at
home. Multi-language support is offered, so it’s great for culturally and
linguistically diverse learners! This application is capable of helping
students reach the first higher-order thinking level in regards to
Bloom’s Taxonomy. To gauge my students’ understanding of the
stories we read in class, I can have them complete a simple mind
mapping project where they will compare and contrast two different
storybooks using Popplet. They can simply take photos of the covers
and pages within the two books and practice highlighting key
similarities and differences between their plots, characters,
illustrations, etc.

How can this app help students evaluate in the
classroom?
Class Dojo is a phenomenal application used by millions of
teachers, students, and parents all around the world! The Dojo team’s
mission is to help build happier classrooms by connecting teachers with
students and parents to build amazing classroom communities. One of the
most favorable features of this application gives students the ability to
create student stories. Student Stories are personal, student-led digital
portfolios. Students can add pictures and videos of work to their Story to
showcase their learning and progress, and share it with their parents and
classmates. This capability gives students a voice and unveils the wonderful
and productive world of social networking, which is becoming increasingly
prominent in the 21st-century! To target the evaluation level of Bloom’s
Taxonomy and meet my chosen standard, I would ask students to evaluate
and critique their favorite storybook using Class Dojo. I would have them
post a picture of their favorite storybook to their digital portfolios along with
a brief caption explaining what the story is all about and why it is their
favorite. Some writing prompts I’d offer them may include: “What makes it a
great book?” or “What do you think could make it an even better book?”

How can this app help students create in the
classroom?
Using the Sock Puppets Complete app along with the built-in microphones on iPads, students can
recreate their favorite storybooks in a unique way. This app allows students to bring adorably
entertaining sock puppets to life by recording themselves reading aloud. This is an exciting way for
students, parents, and teachers to noticeably see and hear each individual’s progress with pronunciation,
speed, and accuracy! Students can also collaborate with one another by creating videos with multiple
puppets to complete this fun and engaging activity! This software and its features are easy to navigate
and there are plenty of instructional resources available. While recording, students can simply tap on a
puppet and that puppet will lip-sync along with their voice; when desired, they can tap on a different
puppet to switch auto lip-synching to it. Students can also adjust the backgrounds to take their puppet
characters to different places, and move the puppets, props, and scenery to animate their recordings.
