Lesson Title: Vampires Don’t Like Vocab

Time Needed: 30 mins

Standard: Vocabulary Acquisition and Use

 L.3.4 Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning

word and phrases based on grade 3 reading and content, choosing flexibly
from a range of strategies.

Objectives: The students will increase their vocabulary with worksheets and games
that are designed to have students rewrite the words, alphabetize the words,
unscramble the words and write sentences using the vocab words.

Materials needed:

 Computer with Microsoft PowerPoint

 Whiteboard/Smartboard
 Vocabulary worksheets
 Pencils, highlighters, crayons, dry erase markers, mini whiteboards
 Novel Packet

Class Activity (15 min):

1. Review what was read in the two chapters assigned for independent reading.
2. Fill in the Blank Activity on the Smartboard. (12 sentences with a missing
vocab word displayed on the white board). I’ll randomly pick students to come
up and fill in one sentence.
3. After Smartboard activity is complete, we will work on page 8 of the novel
packet (identifying the properly spelled vocab word)

Group Activity (15 min): After the classroom activity, we’ll break into smaller groups
and work on page 14 of the novel packet (pick a word and write a sentence using the
word).
Check for Understanding: Come back together as a class and ask for volunteers to
pick one word and sentence to share with everyone.
