Understanding how to implement ISO standards

In order to be competitive in the global market and having in mind the quality processes
as the economics cornerstone, it is essential to have a very good understanding on the
implementation of the quality regulations and standard. That is why, it is of vital
importance to be familiar with the International Standards Organization (ISO) as this
international organization is in charge of providing standards to improve the efficiency in
the performance of different processes and minimizing mistakes and risks that might
lead to productivity issues.

Please, have in mind the following instructions in order to complete the following
activity. This activity has been designed for you to reinforce your knowledge on the ISO
standards and regulations while using English as a means of communication:

1. Read the following text and answer the questions below.

By Michelle Bangert

Companies know ISO standards may be good for them, but they may need motivation
to get certified. Manufacturing sectors have adopted ISO 9000 for three reasons: the
value of the standard, the sales and marketing advantage, and company
requirements.

Companies appreciate how the standard can improve their business processes and
reduce scrap, rework and cost. Second, manufacturers with similar products, service
and price use the certification to differentiate themselves from their competitors. “It
gives you a marketing advantage over the competition. In other words, It’s a
differentiator for customers to pick the best option for them.

The final reason manufacturers adopt ISO 9000 is that they were mandated to do so.
ISO-certified companies may require their suppliers to do the same. “It’s hard to do
business with anyone-especially in manufacturing-if you’re not ISO 9000 certified,”
says an expert who has 25 years experience in international standards.
However, the certificate alone will not improve the company’s business processes.
The goal should be improved business, not a piece of paper. Done correctly, ISO
standards can improve an organization’s business processes and add value.

Experts agree that the most important component to ISO improvements should be
attitudes within the company rather than just documents. “The key is to actually
implement it and get management involved … ISO standards can help by actually
saving money or improving a company’s environmental footprint.” they say. (Bangert,
2007)

2. Based on the text, match the best synonym for each of the terms below. The
meaning can be inferred from the context in which they appear.

A) Competitor 1) Order
B) Mandated 2) Position
C) Value 3) Condition
D) Attitude 4) Economize
E) Requirements 5) Adversary
F) Saving 6) Benefit

3. According to the text, why is it good to implement ISO standards?

Is it good to implement ISO standards because they help us to apply new

technologies to the daily life of the company and to properly manage its resources
and increase productivity. Experts agree that the most important component for ISO
improvements should be attitudes within the company rather that just documents
and for them it is a quality seal that improves the corporate image and increases
and loyalty of relationships with third parties and clients for the optimization of the
internal.

4. What do you think is the best title for the article you read? Why?
