Introduction

This section contains the social and research contexts that justify the need to conduct the
school- based action research.

Social Context
Many students experience math anxiety and because of that we must have to think different
strategies and make the pupils listen to your discussion as a teacher.

There is a saying by Albert Einstein that "A student is not a container you have to fill, but a
torch you have to light up." it means that even the pupils doesn' t have any interest in the
mathematics subject, you must have to think as an educator a way on which you can manage that
situation by using a strategies to attract their attention. It is better to know first the ability and
capacity of each pupils, so that you can apply a good strategy in order for them to absorb and gain
your lessons.

The Problem
Lack of interests in math subject go hand in hand. Solvng this problem can help the pupils to
understand and infer the lessons.

When I observed in Cabolutan Elementary School we encountered many pupils that are not
interested in the math subject.

Specifically as a future educator I should have to think, what are the things that affect the
pupils interests in math subject. So that's why, it is better to have a lot of strategies in order for me
to teach my lessons in a different way.

The Causes
1. Limited strategy in teaching mathematics
2. Lack of techniques in teaching mathematics
3. Lack of attention from the teachers
4. Not having a lot of activities

The Solutions
1. Give some alluring and captivating activities in the pupils to work on.
2. Make your lessons to be more attractive.
3. Provide new things in your class.
4. Organize your lessons properly.
5. Use object to visualize your lesson in math.

Plan of Action
Objectives
1. Improve your pupils performance in math.
2. Enhance their skills by having that strategies and techniques.
Research Questions for Teacher

1. Is it important to have a lot of strategies and activities, in order for the children to learn the topic
lessons?

Answered by Mrs. Nedy S. Abello, yes, it is very important to have a strategies and activities
because it can help them to analyze the lessons.

According to Mathseeds, there are seven effective strategies for teaching Elementary Math.

Make it hands-on
Elementary math can be difficult because it involves learning new, abstract concepts that can
be tricky for children to visualize.

Use visuals and images

While students will come across countless graphs and visuals in their math textbooks,
research shows this isn't the only place they should be utilized.

Find opportunities to differentiate learning

It's important that students feel comfortable and are given the opportunity to learn new math
ideas at their own pace, without feeling rushed. But while the idea that 'given enough time, every
student will learn' is nothing new, it's easier said than done.

Ask students to explain their ideas

Have you ever noticed how much more confident you feel about a concept after explaining it
to someone else? Before assigning a math problem, ask students to brainstorm problem-solving
strategies they can use. Encourage students to work together to suggest different strategies in a
respectful way.

Incorporate storytelling to make connections to real-world scenarios

When it comes to igniting the interest of young minds, not much comes close to a good
story. Incorporate story problems into your classroom lessons allow students to see how certain
math concepts can apply to real life. Story problems are also a good way to help students
understand how to use math in everyday life, and see the relevance of math.

Show and tell new concepts

Elementary math teachers should normally begin each lesson with a 'show and tell.' Telling
is the process of sharing information and knowledge with students, while showing involves
modeling how to do something.

Let your students regularly know how they're doing

Feedback is an important part of teaching elementary math and improving students' results.
Let your students know how they have performed on a specific task, along with helpful ways that
they can further improve and extend their skills.

2. What are things that you must have to do as a teacher, to attract their attention?

Answered by Mrs. Nedy S. Abello, the things that i must have to do to attract their attention
are by using visual aids, calling their names and by having colorful pictures.

According to the Busy.Teacher.Org there are tricks to get your class attention.
1.) Change the level and tone of your voice

Often just changing the level and tone of your voice, lowering it or raising it, will signal to the
students it’s time to pay attention.

2.) Use props like a bell or whistle

Better for lower level or younger learners, props like these clearly mark beginnings, endings, and
other transitions within the class.

3.) Use a visual related to the instruction

Holding up a striking picture related to the session, such as environmental debris if the class topic
is related to the environment, is sure to get all eyes on you. Don’t comment on it; allow students
to start the dialogue.

4.) Make a startling statement or give a quote

Writing a surprising statement or quote related to the content on the board has a similar effect: for
example “More than half of children in Philippines speak some language other than Tagalog at
home” if the topic is language acquisition.

5.) Write a pop quiz question on the board

Write a basic comprehension question related to the reading on the board. Students have to answer
it on slips of paper and turn them in. This gets students focused right away on course material. The
question can then lead to discussion after the quiz.

3. Is it important to have a math subject in Elementary?

Answered by Mrs. Nedy S. Abello, yes, it is important to have a math subject in the
Elementary in order for them to learn how to count numbers and to use the four fundamentals.

According to Dr. Tanya Evans, there are some reasons that math are a powerful and incredibly
useful tool.
1. Learning math is good for your brain.
2. Math helps you tell time.
3. Math helps you with your finances.
4. Math makes you a better cook.
5. Math helps us have better problem-solving skills.
6. Math is used in practically every career in some way.
7. Math is all around us and helps us understand the world better.
8. Math can help you shop a good sale.

Research Questions for Students

3. In addition, substraction, multiplication and division, what did you like most?
Ans. Addition
4. Do you like having recitation or activities in the paper?
Ans. Activities in the paper

Summary of Related Studies

According to Mathseeds, while individual students do benefit from different learning styles,
there are a range of effective strategies which can help all students to succeed.
Additionally, the highly engaging, self-paced Mathseeds program offers a research-based
solution for mixed-ability K–2 math classrooms, making math fun, interactive, and personalized
for young learners.

In summary of Dr. Tanya Evans math is not only important for success in life; it is all around
us. The laws of mathematics are evident throughout the world, including in nature, and the
problem-solving skills obtained from completing math homework can help us tackle problems in
other areas of life. While many may complain that math is boring or complicated, the truth is that
a life devoid of math means that we go around experiencing the world on a much less interesting
level than we could.
Proposed Methodology

This chapter discusses the methods that have been used in the collection and analysis of data
to answer the action research. It explains the participants, data collection, data analysis and the
ethical considerations.
This action research will determine the importance to have a lot of strategies and activities,
in order for the children to learn the lesson and the things you must have to do as a teacher, to
attract their attention.

Participants
1 Teacher and 2 selected students from Grade 2 class, advisory of Mrs. Nedy S. Abello.

Data Collection
At the beginning of the study of this action research, the research questions will be used, to
know what are the problem of having lack of interest in math subject. Then, I record my
observations in my research journal. I also ask selected pupils to answer my research questions.
All of the data will be recorded in this action research.
Data Analysis
At this level, all of the data as the answers of the questions will be analyzed using the
question-answer method. The data such as those interview, observations and research questions
will be analyzed.

Ethical Considerations
Since, this action research are for pupils sake, this would help them in their studies because
of the teacher new strategies and techniques in teaching. It will also be indicated the way to
improve the grade of every pupils by having this strategy and techniques in teaching math subject.
