Problem Solve Using Venn Diagrams

Draw 2 overlapping circles.


List the multiples of 5, to 100 in one circle and the multiples of 8 to 100 in the other.
Write any common multiples in the overlap (intersection) of the two circles.
Draw a square around the LCM of 5 and 8.

1. Joseph completes a race track circuit every 5 minutes.


Rose takes 4 minutes and
Bill 6 minutes.
After how many minutes will all three cross the finish line together?
How many laps will each person have run?

2. Sam has a jug with a capacity of 500ml


Sarah has a jug which holds 800ml and
Wendy has a jug which holds 300ml.
For each jug list the capacities of buckets which can be filled using the exact number of
jugs.
What is the capacity of the smallest bucket that could be filled using an exact number of
each type.

Write all the factors of 36.


List the multiples of each factor to 50
Circle any multiple which occurs in all lists.
Explain why this occurs.
