comes from the oceans
estimated to be covering
7/10 of earth.

GIVEN FRACTION.
•GIVEN TWO FRACTIONS, DETERMINE IF THEY ARE EQUAL.
•SOLVE PROBLEMS INVOLVING FRACTIONS.
Compare and contrast the following figures:

ballpens. What fraction describes
the set of red ballpens? Black ballpens?
a. 6 out of 9 ballpens are red
or 2 out of 3 ballpens are red

b. 3 out of 9 ballpens are black

or 1 out of 3 are black ballpens.
HOW DO WE FIND OUT IF ONE FRACTION EQUALS
ANOTHER?

1. WE CAN REDUCE ONE OR BOTH TO LOWEST TERMS

EX. ¾ AND 9/12
9/12 ÷ 3/3 = ¾
9/12 = 3/4

FRACTIONS
AND MIXED
NUMBERS
TCHNSMX2017
OBJECTIVES
■ Define and illustrate proper fractions, improper
fractions and mixed numbers.
■ Change a mixed number to an improper
fraction and vice versa.
■ Solve word problems involving mixed
numbers.
Hands – on….
■ Draw a rectangle. Shade the rectangle to
represent the whole number 1.
■ Draw an identical rectangle beside the first one.
Separate this rectangle into four equal parts to
show fourths. Shade one part to represent ¼.
■ Separate the whole number portion into 1/4s.
How many shaded
1/4s are there?
What fraction is
equivalent to 1 ¼?
How many shaded
1/4s are there?
REMEMBER

A proper fraction, such as

2/3 is a fraction with the
numerator smaller than
the denominator
REMEMBER

An improper fraction is a
fraction in which the
numerator is equal to or
larger than the denominator
REMEMBER

A mixed number like 2 ½, is

a number which has a whole
number and a fraction
FYI!!

The body of the vampire bat

measures 2 ¾ inches. Express
the body length of a vampire
bat as an improper fraction.
We can change a mixed number into
an improper fraction or an improper
fraction into a mixed number.
Examples: Change 2 ¾ and 5 1/6 to improper fractions.
Solution: a. Express 2 as fourths: 2=2X4/4=4/8
Add ¾ to 8/4 = 11/4
b. Express 5 as sixths: 5=5X6/6 =30/6
Add 1/6 to 30/6 = 31/6
Thus 2 ¾ = 11/4 and 5 1/6= 31/6
To change an improper fraction to a
mixed number, we reverse the
procedure.
■
Examples: Change (a) 19/4 (b) 27/5
Solution 1: a. 19/4 = 16/4 +3/4 = 3 + ¾ = 4 ¾
b. 27/5 = 25/5 + 2/5 = 5 + 2/5 = 5 2/5
Solution 2: a. 19/4 = 19 b. 27/5 = 27 5 = 5R2
19/4 = 4 +3/4 = 4 ¾ 27/5 = 5 +2/5 = 5 2/5
Thus 19/4 = 4 ¾ and 27/5 = 5 2/5
PRACTICE
Change the following to mixed numbers
with the fractional part in lowest terms.
1. 13/8
2. 31/8
3. 32/9
4. 67/12
5. 24/5
PRACTICE
Change each mixed number to an
improper fraction.
1. 4 3/5
2. 5 8/11
3. 9 2/3
4. 8 7/9
5. 6 5/7

COMPARING AND
ORDERING FRACTIONS
OBJECTIVES
1. Explain how to compare fractions with:
a. The same denominator but different numerators
b. The same numerator but different denominators
c. Different numerators and denominators
2. Given two fractions determine which one is greater.
3. Arrange fractions from least to greatest and vice versa.
4. Solve word problems involving the comparison of
fractions.
A B
A B
Strategy
• Make sure the denominators are the same.
• Compare the numerators.

•If the denominators are not the same,

then rewrite the fractions using a
common denominator.
•The new fractions should be equivalent
to the original fractions.
Writing Equivalent Fractions
• One way to find a common denominator is to
multiply the two original denominators.

5 3
6 > 4 6 x 4 = 24

x4 20 > 18
x6

20 18
24 24
•Another way to compare fractions is to find the LCM of both
denominators.
•Use the LCM as the new denominator in the equivalent fractions.

12, 24, 36, 48, 60

Ordering Fractions

• Find the LCM of the denominators.

• Use the LCM to write equivalent
fractions.
• Put the fractions in order using the
numerators.
Example - Order from Least to Greatest:
3 2 1
8 5 4

40 40 40
8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48
