VOCABULARY
Equivalent fractions are fractions that name the same
amount.

CREATING EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS

Multiply the numerator and denominator by the
same number. Changing fraction to higher term.
Divide the numerator and denominator by the same
number (it has to be a common factor to work with
division). Changing to lowest term.
We can choose any number to multiply
by. Lets multiply by 2.

3 x2
6
=
10
5 x2

So, 3/5 is equivalent to

6/10.

If you have larger numbers, you can make equivalent

fractions using division. Divide by a common factor. This
is changing to lowest term.

28 7 = 4
35 7 5

In this example, we can

divide both numbers by 7.
Since 28 and 35 are both
multiples of seven.

28/35 is equivalent to 4/5.

Solution: Remember your multiplication table

number
7 since we are dividing a
number by seven.
7 x 4 = 28 and

7 x 5 = 35

Try this one..

HOW DO YOU IDENTIFY EQUAL

FRACTIONS ?
TWO FRACTIONS ARE EQUAL IF ONE
FRACTION IS A HIGHER TERM OF THE
OTHER.
We can choose any number to multiply
by. Lets multiply by 2.

2 x2
4
=
8
4 x2

So, 2/4 is equivalent to

4/8.

HOW DO YOU IDENTIFY EQUAL

FRACTIONS ?
TWO FRACTIONS ARE EQUAL IF ONE
FRACTION IS A LOWER TERM OF THE
OTHER.
We can choose any number to divide by.
Lets divide by 2.

4
8 2

2
= 4

So, 4/8 is equivalent to

2/4.

Let us identify if these fractions

are equal.

TWO FRACTIONS ARE EQUAL IF THEIR

CROSS PRODUCTS ARE EQUAL.
First, multiply the numerator of the first
fraction to the denominator of the second
fraction. The product will be the
numerator.

4
16
=

Solution:
2x8=

So, the product 16

belongs to the first fraction
which is 2/4.

TWO FRACTIONS ARE EQUAL IF THEIR

CROSS PRODUCTS ARE EQUAL.

2
4

Second, multiply the denominator of the

first fraction to the numerator of the
second fraction. The product will be the
denominator

4
=
8
16

Solution:
4 x 4 = 16

So, the product 16

belongs to the second
fraction which is 4/8.

THE CROSS PRODUCT ARE EQUAL,

THEREFORE 2/4 AND 4/8 ARE EQUAL, OR
2/4 = 4/8
