Objectives:
 Add and subtract similar fractions and mixed numbers accurately.
 Change dissimilar fractions to similar fractions.
 Add and subtract dissimilar fractions and mixed numbers.
 Subtract fractions from whole numbers.
 Express sum and difference in simplest form.

Lesson14
Addition and subtraction of similar fractions

 To add similar fractions, add the numerators and copy the same
denominator. Express the sum in simplest form.

 To add similar fractions with whole numbers, add the numerators and
copy the same denominator. Add the whole numbers. Express the sum
in simplest form.

 To subtract similar fractions, subtract the numerators and copy the

same denominator. Subtract the whole numbers. Express the
difference in simplest form.

Example:
4 2 3 9 4
 5 + 5 + 5 = 5 or 1 5

5 7 12 1 12
 2 8 +4 8 = 6 8 or7 2 8
is an improper fraction

12 4 1
is 1 or1 in mixed numeral.
8 8 2
12 4 1 1
6 8 =6+1 8 =6+1 2 = 7 2
8 4 4 2
 10 - 10 = 10 or 5

Subtracting Fractions from Whole Numbers

To subtract fractions from whole number, follow these steps:
 Rename the whole number.
 Subtract the numerators and copy the denominator.
 Subtract the whole number.
 Simplify the fraction if possible.

To add dissimilar fractions,

1.) find the LCD of the given set of fractions.
2.) change the dissimilar fractions to similar fractions.
3.) add the numerators and copy the denominator.
4.) express the sum in lowest term.

To add mixed numbers with different denominators:

 Find the LCD of the given fractions.
 Change the dissimilar fractions to similar fractions.
 Add the numerators and copy the denominator.
 Add the whole numbers.
 Express the sum in simplest form.

To subtract dissimilar fractions:

 Find the LCD of the denominators
 Change the dissimilar fractions to similar fractions
 Subtract the numerators and copy the denominator
 Express the difference in lowest term.

To subtract mixed numbers with different denominators:

 Get the LCD of the denominators.
 Change the mixed numbers to similar fractions.
 Subtract the numerators and copy the denominator.
 Subtract the whole numbers.
 Simplify the difference.
