UNIT 1 LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION DEVELOPMENT

It is a process by which children come to understand and communicate language during


their early stages of development.
 Sounds produced by the child , physical movements of the child , signs to communicate
needs and elders conversation with the child are early signs of language and
communication development. – Pre-lingual communication.
Preparation for language development ;
Three kinds of signs
1. Crying -It is the preparation to learn language .It tries to develop the sound through
crying
2. Babbling -In the 8th -10th month vocal cords are developed. It produce sounds and
some word are developed .Sounds are produced very well due to the growth of the
Teeth in the 6 th month onwards
Sounds produced by the child it sounds like consonants .It is called babbling
3. Gestures-Using hands ,heads ,body language -plays an important role in the language
development .
STAGES OF LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT:
1. COMPREHENSION :
 Ability to understand meaning of words uttered by others.
 This requires good listening capacity .
 Listening to the word or sound start right from the fourth month, In the 6 th to 8th
month child will hear the word and try to pronounce the words .It will not be clear -it is
mostly babbling .At the 12th month child say 2 or 4 alphabet words
 So comprehension of the language will lead to language development the child
 After 1 year child will speak simple sentence .As it listens to more words ,it will start
incorporating the more words in its vocabulary.
 Lifelong this process will go on the part of the child .
 More language can also be learnt in the same way .

2. BUILDING VOCABULARY :
 It is possible by hearing and reading .
 Vocabulary is new words .Unless and until new words are not learnt vocabulary will
not develop.
 First children learns nouns , then pronouns, then verbs, then adverbs. This way
vocabulary develops in the children .
 From 18th month children learn the adjectives
 Development of the vocabulary depends on the intelligence of the child .More
intelligent the child it will read ,listen to more vocabulary -leading to rapid language
development
 Once the child goes to school -it will learn the vocabulary of three language
3. FORMATIOMN OF SENTENCES :
 Comprehension of words and vocabulary development make child to make sentences .
 Language developments happens when the child start speaking the language .Reading
and writing is not enough to learn language .
 During the first year ,in sentence formation -child will use one or two word.
 At the end od second year -it will be single sentences. Some will be incomplete.
 At the age 4-to-5-years, child makes compound sentences as well as complex
sentences on the basis of the language learnt .
 As per survey language learning ability in girls is more than the boys .

4. CORRECT PRONONCIATION:
 From third- and fourth-year correct pronunciation takes place. It continues throughout
the life of the individual
 It depends on : vocal organs, training, motivation and individual differences
 The pronunciation depends on vocal organs like -
 Vocal cords ,movement of the mouth, movement of the tongue, structure of the teeth -
all this play an important role in the pronunciation
 Child should be motivated to correct the pronunciation otherwise leading to wrong
pronunciation.
 Individual differences -depending on the experience in the language ,culture -ones
pronunciation matters.

5. VOCABULARY :
This vocabulary is required for the enhancement in the language development.
 In the later stages ,child learns new words and their meaning.
 This happens due to more reading articles ,stories ,magazines news paper ,listening to
news
 Self motivation to develop the vocabulary plays an important role .
 They also learn new meaning to known words and
 How, where and when to use the words will be learnt in the later part of the language
development

6. DEVELOPMENT OF SKILL IN READING : 


 Develops at the age of 6. 
 Requires knowledge of words and alphabets
 As it goes ,child learns new words, sentence ,meaning .So reading plays an important
role in language development .

7. MASTERY OVER COMMUNICATION :


 As child develops speaking, reading, writing and listening skills .
 It acquires mastery the language over period of time .
 It depends from person to person due the individual differences.
 Each individual develops own system of communication -it includes
language ,voice ,tone ,modulation ,gesture and intonation -forms the communication
system of the individual
