The Beginnings of American Literature

17th Century

The Arrival of English-speaking Europeans

John Smith wrote literary texts to explain the
colonizing activities and worship of America as a land
of economic promise.
All 17th-century American writings were written in
the manner of British writings of the same period.
The Beginnings of American Literature

18th Century
Some writers carried on the older traditions.
However, other authors focused more on showing
daily records of life.
The American Revolution emphasized the differences
between British and American concepts and ideologies.
Poetry became a powerful weapon during the
American Revolution as writers state arguments and
praise their heroes in verses and songs.
At the end of the 18th century, dramas and novels
with historical importance were produced.
The Beginnings of American Literature

19th Century
William Cullen Bryant, Washington Irving, James
Fenimore Cooper, and Edgar Allan Poe initiated a
great half-century of literary development in the 19th
century.
The authors who became prominent in the 1830s up
until the end of the civil war did their work in a new
spirit.
The Civil War was a turning point in U.S. history and
a new way of living.
The Beginnings of American Literature

19th Century
Writers of many types of works contributed to a
great body of literature that flourished between the
Civil War and 1914—literature of social revolt.
Literary forms were varied leading to radical
technical experiments of writers.
The Beginnings of American Literature

20th Century
American novelists were expanding fiction to
encompass both high and low life and realism.
Literary pieces after World War II were described
as a second flowering of American writing which
offers rich variety and new maturity.
Contemporary American literature has broad
parameters but postmodernism has been found as the
commonality of literary writings in this period.

Align myself with small theatre companies Aching for life to

Allowed them life out of sight I swiftly press the pages
But this morning I lightly breathe Into their folder, to close tight again
The scent of sadness Against the bite of
And dread arising Fresh, trenchant
Surprisingly from these leftovers Memory.
