ELA - Language Development Teaching Assignment

An overview and objective of the lesson I taught for my supervisor were for students to

define and use adjectives. I started the lesson by activating prior knowledge and reviewing nouns

to help with new information. I reviewed the words listed on the nouns slide and then asked

students to give examples of nouns to asses. I introduced the lesson by asking the students if they

knew what an adjective is and then introduced adjectives - describing words that tell about

people, places, and things (nouns). I went over adjectives and presented a two-minute youtube

clip that defined what an adjective is. I then had students think-pair-share what they learned from

the video. I encouraged students to share what they learned in partner talk, providing a safe

space for students to express their thoughts and learn from one another. After, every pair got a

stuffed animal to describe with each other. Specific strategies I incorporated in my lesson were a

PowerPoint presentation, a video, and multiple partner talks. The PowerPoint presentation,

video, and partner talks are great tools for English language learners. As a follow-up lesson plan

and based on the post-assessment, I will move forward with leveled activities to fit the student.

Students who can define and use adjectives will move forward and work with struggling students

during free write time and write sentences that use adjectives.

Some changes I would make to my instruction is adding a KWLQ graphic organizer

when first introducing the topic of adjectives. Although I asked all the questions orally, a chart
would be a great tool and benefit English learners who tend to have less background knowledge

in topics presented, such as the meaning of adjectives. Also, reviewing and checking students’

completed L charts would be a great way for me to evaluate their learning. Creating a KWLQ

graphic organizer would be a great visual tool for students to constantly look at and not lose

focus throughout the lesson. It will allow students to become more curious and eager to

participate in the learning process. It would also be an excellent reference for students always to

look back on and remind them of the time they went back in time. It would help students

visualize their background knowledge and new information they learned throughout the learning

process.
