In this lesson the class will read a book and practice making predictions about
Overview the story.

1. I will start off by reading the “I can” statement “I can make predictions
before, during and after reading”.
2. I will explain to the students that readers make predictions throughout
reading a text. Readers use their background knowledge and what is
happening in the story to make a good guess about what will happen
next.
3. Lastly, I will ask the students “Why do readers make predictions?” and
Introduction/Hook tell them to turn to someone nex to them and answer the question. Once
they finish discussing I will call on a few students to hear their answers.
4. Next I will tell the students that predicting helps the reader think about
the story while reading. Predicting helps the reader guide their thinking
and pay careful attention to what is happening in the story. I will then
put the prediction practice slides on the board and complete 2 scenarios
with the class. We will talk through what the students predict about the
scenario and why they made that prediction.
1. To start I will tell the students that we are going to read the story,
Mr.Wolf’s Pancakes and practice making predictions.
2. Next, I will show the students the cover illustration and read aloud the
title of the text. I will tell the students to turn to their partner and ask
them to answer the question “what do you see in the cover illustration
and how does that connect to the title?”.
3. I will listen into the student discussion. I will show the Prediction Talk
Card on the board. I will tell them what my prediction is by using the
cover of the book.

4. Then we will start reading the book. I will then say “as we read, we will
use our prediction to guide our thinking, and we will see if we can
confirm our prediction”.
5. I will stop after reading pg. 3 and say “Think about what you have read
so far. What do you predict will happen when Mr. Wolf goes to get help
from his neighbors?” I will call on a few students to hear their answer.
Then I will continue reading.
6. I will stop after reading pg. 17 and say “think about what we have read
about Mr. Wolf and his neighbors. Was our first prediction confirmed
about Mr. Wolf and his neighbors?”. “Now on this page, we read that the
pigs were mean to Mr. Wolf and he feels sad. What do you predict he
will do next?”. I will call on a few students and listen to their answer.
Then I will continue reading.
7. I will stop after reading on pg. 21 and say “think about what we know
about Mr. Wolf and his neighbors. They were mean to Mr. Wolf but now
they smell his pancakes and have decided to try their luck. What do you
predict the neighbors will do next? What do you predict Mr. Wolf will
do?”. I will call on one or two students and listen to their answer.
8. I will bring the students back together and show the prediction graphic
organizer on the board. I will then say “I am thinking about how all of
Mr. Wolf’s neighbors would not help him with his pancakes. They were
mean to him and even made him cry. Now, he has made yummy,
delicious pancakes by himself.” I will then say “I am ready to make a
prediction using the clues from the story. I predict that they will ask Mr.
Wolf for pancakes, and he will tell them to go away, because they were
mean throughout the story and did not help him, so he will not help
them”. I will write this on the graphic organizer to show the students.
Then I will continue reading.
9. I will stop after reading pg. 25. I will reread the last sentence, “Mr Wolf
shook his head, shrugged his shoulders, followed them into the kitchen,
and when they were all in…”. Then I will say “now, you will make your
own prediction. What do you predict Mr. Wolf and the neighbors will do
next?”. During this I will walk around and talk with students about their
predictions. This will be used as a formative assessment to determine if
the student can make a relevant and thoughtful prediction related to the
events in the text. After a reasonable amount of time, I will bring the
students attention back to finish reading the text.
10. After we finish reading I will reread my prediction and ask the students
if my prediction was confirmed. Then, I will tell the students to think
carefully about the prediction they made. Was it confirmed? Once they
know if their prediction was or was not confirmed, I will call on a few
students to hear their answer.

I will reread the “I can” statement “I can make predictions before, during and
after reading”. I wil then say “Today, we practiced making predictions. Readers
make predictions throughout reading a text, thinking carefully about their
Closure Activity background knowledge and what is happening in the story. How does making
predictions help the reader understand the story?”. This will be our closing
discussion.

There will be no formal assessment. The students will be informally assessed
when they make their prediction about the story. I will listen into their
