September 2021 Seminar Reflection

During this month’s seminar, the class discussed petitioning to graduate as well as all the

individual graduation requirements needed for graduation. Each month, second-year students

will need to submit three artifacts and three corresponding reflections explaining why we have

chosen each artifact for one of the six Health Care Informatics Program competencies. So far, I

have selected two artifacts and written their respective reflections. In addition, I’ve been working

on my ePortfolio website, uploading my seminar reflections, editing my resume as needed, and

uploading artifacts tentatively under appropriate competencies. The reason I have not completed

more artifact reflections is that certain assignments could be artifacts for more than one

competency. For example, a data-heavy project with data analysis in Excel and a paper or

presentation could work for Health Science Knowledge and Skills or it could work for the Data

and Knowledge Management competency. Therefore, tentatively categorizing assignments as

artifacts for certain competencies helps me monitor how I’m doing with fulfilling each

competency requirement without wasting my time writing a reflection that might need to be

rewritten to work for a different competency. However, I also know that I don’t want to be

bombarded with artifact reflections when graduation nears.

I do have concerns regarding whether I will be able to meet all the competency

requirements because I am in the Data Science track (as opposed to the Leadership track, for

example), which might assign fewer assignments that could be used as artifacts for the

Leadership and Systems Management competency or the Social Justice and Community

Activism competency. In my leadership class during the summer, we only completed one

project, and I’m not sure how I will create five other artifacts (two for Leadership, three for

Social Justice) in the remaining classes I have in my track. I will need to talk with other students

in my track and meet with professors in the future to see if they can help advise me on how to

complete the Leadership and Social Justice artifacts. It’s possible that I already have an artifact

that I overlooked if the scope of these competencies is broader than I thought. Regarding the four

other competencies, however, I am not worried, and I believe I am on track to finish those on

time.
