Government/Leaders

In 1973, Pro Soviet Gen. Mohammed Daoud Khan overthrew the previous king, and Afghanistan's
People’s Demographic Party rises to power. Khan rids the monarchy and becomes president. The
government now has firm ties with USSR. In 1978, Khan was killed in a communist coup. And the
Afghan Communist Party takes control and declares separation from the Soviet Union, making
their policies based on Islamic principles. The United States getting involved until American
Ambassador Adolph Dubs and cuts off assistance. USSR takes advantage and invades in 1979.
