Geography and weather of Afghanistan
● Afghanistan is a landlocked nation in South Asia
● Borders 6 countries: Pakistan, Tajikistan, Iran,
Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and China
● Rainfall in Afghanistan is scarce, rainfall happens in the
lowlands and is unpredictable
● The temperatures are extreme, it can get very cold and
very hot in a short period of time.
● The Hindu Kush is a mountain range that reaches 24,000ft

Government/Leaders

In 1973, Pro Soviet Gen. Mohammed Daoud Khan overthrew the previous king, and Afghanistan's
People’s Demographic Party rises to power. Khan rids the monarchy and becomes president. The
government now has firm ties with USSR. In 1978, Khan was killed in a communist coup. And the
Afghan Communist Party takes control and declares separation from the Soviet Union, making
their policies based on Islamic principles. The United States getting involved until American
Ambassador Adolph Dubs and cuts off assistance. USSR takes advantage and invades in 1979.
Millions are fleeing the country to escape the Afghan guerrillas and Soviet troops—Saudi Islamist
Osama bin Laden. Wanted a pure nation of Islam, and the Soviets were in the way. 1994, the
Taliban is formed and enforces Islamic law. After constant conflicts with the U.S, The Taliban
takes over Kabul as the Afghanistan government collapses.

Religious Practices

● 99% Muslim
● Adibe to and show their faith to God through strict dress codes, dietary
restrictions, regular prayer, and language.
● Strong tension between Sunni and Shi’a groups
● Women wear head coverings and are to follow Sharia Law strictly
Research the current situation in Afghanistan - Nat
● In May of 2021, it was announced that the U.S. Military will be leaving Afghanistan by Sept. 2021
● The Taliban kept offending, and threatening the Gov’t controlled urban areas and seizing several border crossings
● The Taliban captured the capital of Southern Nimruz Province ( one of the first provincial capitals to fall). After
the provincial capitals began to fall at a rapid pace.
● Taliban fighters entered the capital, leading the Afghan President to flee the country and the Afghan Gov’t to
collapse. Later announced that they took control of the city and established checkpoints.
The Girl Effect

● Women, especially girls are deprived of an education in many countries

● One way to help end poverty is by giving girls education
● By making education more widespread, it could remove teen pregancy, child
marriage, and break the cycle of poverty
 Predictions:
Camila: I think we can expect
that this book and story will
include themes of trauma
through the wars as the author
himself got to experience it first
hand. As well as possible
involvement of a strong female
character in the story perhaps
going into detail of the life of a
woman in Afghanistan during
war times.
Natalie: I think that book will
possibly be in a woman's
perspective of traumatic events
that may have happened, but
also about something joyuse.
Since the author once lived in
Afghanistan I can only assume
that the author himself went
through want happens in the
story or maybe someone he once
knew even someone he knows or
even knew.
Jaume: I think this story will be
rough, as it will contain first hand
or second hand knowledge of the
events unfolding in Afghanistan,
which over the past couple of
decades has been subject to lots
of fighting. I can tell it will be
especially rough since the book
will tell the story from the
perspective of a female.
