Multicultural Lesson Plan: Subject, Nevada Core Standard, Multicultural Goal and
Observable Objectives
1. Subject and grade level: 8th Grade English
2. 2 Nevada Core Curriculum Standards:
(a) Craft and Structure: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are
used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of
specific word choices on meaning and tone, including analogies or allusions to other
texts.
(b) Integration of Knowledge and Ideas: Evaluate the advantages and
disadvantages of using different mediums (e.g., print or digital text, video, multimedia) to
present a particular topic or idea.
3. Observable Objectives:
(a) First the student has to define what tone, figurative meanings, connotative
meanings, and allusions all mean. Next, they need to summarize the text with the
understood definitions. Then, teach their finings to their group or partner. The
partners/group will find how the stories relate. Next they should learn how to support
each other's ideas for their summaries. Finally they will all write a collaborative
summary of their texts showing all views.
(b) First the student should identify all the different mediums. Then they need to
compare and contrast all of the different mediums. The should choose a medium and
complete a presentation using that medium. The class will then conduct a survey of
how many students used each medium and why. Next, students will choose to modify
their original presentations based on the survey responses. Finally they will present their
final medium choice and defend why they chose that specific medium for their topic of
presentation.
4. Multicultural Goal: Build social relationships to promote interests in differences and
include others in school and social activities.
5. Observable Objective: First students will identify and describe their own lives,
personalities, and interests/hobbies. They will then express and present these reports to
their groups. Then students will conduct interviews with other groups in the classroom to
find out similarities. Students will then compare and contrast their own interests with
their chosen classmates. Students will then plan and introduce different clubs/after
school activities for students with common interests. Finally students will decide which
activities to organize and join.
