Success criteria for any transactional piece

✓Correct and effective use of form & structure


✓Create an engaging and convincing narrative voice
✓Show an awareness of your audience
✓Use an appropriate register
✓Use sophisticated and ambitious vocabulary
✓Use accurate and ambitious punctuation and grammar
Checklist for structuring a magazine article
✓Headline (catchy and witty)
✓Subheading (one sentence to give more information)
✓Date & by-line
✓Distinctive narrative voice (though usually avoid 1st person)
✓A brief introduction to the topic which explains why it is important (i.e.
why are you writing about it?)
✓Make sure your article has a clear direction and purpose. Your material
should be organised purposefully and your ideas should progress.
✓Include a range of features such as interviews/examples/AFOREST
✓Finish on a thought-provoking note which ties up your piece.
Writing a magazine article
You are going to write a magazine article for ‘Time’ Magazine about the social
impact of the pandemic. You will have to choose a topic which interests you and
research it thoroughly.

Some ideas:
• How technology has impacted education/the workplace
• The impact of lockdown on family relationships
• The record number of students applying to be nurses
• The increase in suicide rates for women in Japan
• The increase in demand for pets during lockdown
• The increasing rates of alcoholism among doctors
• A specific country’s handling of the pandemic (e.g. China or New Zealand)
Independent task: writing a magazine article
1. Conduct research on your chosen topic
2. Plan your article thoroughly
3. Decide on what style you will use for the article
4. Write a headline and a subheading
5. Write your introduction
6. Write your body paragraphs, referring back to the checklist regularly
7. When you have finished, proofread your work:
• Use a thesaurus to improve five pieces of vocabulary
• Make sure you have included a RANGE of punctuation - :;,.?”()
• Read your work ALOUD to check for poor grammar
• Refer back to the checklist to make sure you have met the success criteria
Peer Assess
Peer assess your partner’s work using the following table. Copy and paste the table onto
their work and send it back to them. You will then discuss the feedback in breakout rooms.

Have they…
Used the correct layout for a magazine article? (Heading, subheading etc)
Crafted an engaging narrative voice?
Written an introduction which summarises the topic?
Organised their material purposefully to give their article a sense of progression?
Researched the topic well?
Ended on a thought-provoking note?
Included ambitious vocabulary and sentence structure?
Proofread their work for accuracy? (SPAG)
