Lesson Idea Name: Student Response leads to students’ growth

Content Area: Basketball
Grade Level(s): 6th grade - 8th grade
Content Standard Addressed: Standard 1: TSWBAT demonstrate competency in motor skills and movement
patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
Technology Standard Addressed: ISTE1.1.c: TSWBAT use technology to seek feedback that informs and
improves their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

Selected Technology Tool:

☒ Quizizz ☐ Plickers ☐ Formative (recommended)

URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): https://quizizz.com/admin/

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☐ Desktop ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☒ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☒ Laptop ☐ Other: (such as Plicker)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-led (Live) ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): This lesson will guide students in their understanding in how, what, and
why – as it allows for student-centered learning. I will do this by giving the students a student response
assessment tool, Quizizz, which will assess their knowledge that the students may already have in regards to
their understanding on basketball. I will use this information to show my students why we need to know
these basketball skills. Additionally, I can use this information to see what I need to further teach my students
to improve their basketball skills and overall knowledge on the sport. The students will be applying these skills
into basketball games / drills and they will also be able to explain how they can take these skills and apply
them to other areas of their lives.
Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity: Before I introduce this student response tool, I will give my students basketball equipment
and encourage them to show me what they already know using a basketball. This could be simple dribbling
skills, moving with the ball skills, and overall knowledge skills. This will be my instant activity – as it will get the
students moving and get them curious to learn more. Following this, I will introduce the SRT by having the
students grab their mobile devices (or providing them with one) and will have them answer the questions to
the best of their ability. I will instruct them to put their devices away when done.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☐ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: The students will answer the questions on the
Quizizz to the best of their ability. I, the teacher, will monitor these students and make sure they stay on task.

I will provide help if needed and will provide congruent feedback. Each student will need their laptop, or
other mobile device, in order to complete the Quizizz. This activity will take about 5-10 minutes for the
students to complete.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☒ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response ☒ Other: Drawing
If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10 questions
required): N/A

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☐ Yes ☐ No
☒ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not? I will go over the questions that may be challenging to some, and I will start off my first
lesson by helping the students better-understand the content in these specific questions. This will allow for a
smooth transition into my first activity.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity? After the SRT activity, I will go over a few tricky
questions. I will go over the specific positions and roles of those specific positions. I will allow for many
demonstrations from myself and the students as well, as this will allow for me to adhere to the visual
learners in the class. Additionally, I will go over the cues needed for these skills and how to hold/dribble
the basketball.

How will the data be used? I will use this data to plan on what I want to teach more of, and what I think the
students need more time practicing. I will use the data at the beginning of the lesson to shape the activities
that will allow more time for student engagement. This will allow me to better prepare my students in order
for them to get a good grade on this assignment. Additionally, the data will be used to strategically pair
students up based on their skill level. This will allow for a better chance of overall success in the classroom.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. For this lesson, I am trying something different by
checking for student-understanding prior to the lesson. This will make it easier for the students to apply what
they’ve learned throughout the lesson. Checking for students’ understanding prior to the lesson beginning
will give me an easier way to transition into the lesson and understand what students know well and what
they need improvement on.

Reflective Practice:
Overall, these activities I created impact student learning by giving them the opportunity to learn more skills,
work with others, and apply their knowledge to the gameplay. This lesson incorporates student engagement
in all aspects. Additionally, assigning a pre and post test is a great way to allow the lesson to run smoothly and
for me to plan an efficient / fun lesson that adheres to their knowledge. To further extend the lesson, I could
have the students create their own Quizizz and test their classmates. I will demonstrate how to create one,
and how to make them creative. I will have instructions posted online for them to see.
