Chapter 7

Scenario 7.1
How could Val have avoided this situation?
Val could have not posted the photos to social media, deleted them before her placement, or put
her account on private so that her students and faculty would not be able to see what she was
posting.
How can teachers maintain a separate social and professional life?
Teachers need to be especially aware of where they are living their social life. I think that having
an age-appropriate social life is not necessarily horrible, but teachers should do it away from the
county or neighboring counties of where they teach, and they should never post anything they
wouldn't want their students, colleagues, or administration seeing.
How are you represented in social media? Are these sources of information appropriate for
student viewing?
I think that I am represented well on social media, and I would not be worried if a student or
parent found my accounts. I do my best to remain as professional at all times on all platforms.

Scenario 7.2
What would you do in this situation?
I would try to pay attention to what the teacher was saying, and then go to talk to
administration/counselors at the school to check up on the situation and to ensure that the student
is okay, and that hopefully it was a reasonable reaction on the teacher's end.
What are the possible repercussions for choosing to try and stop this behavior?
You could be wrong about the situation and confuse the student and undermine the
teacher. You could also be attacked by the teacher yourself if they are genuinely reacting in an
inappropriate way at the moment.
What are the possible repercussions of choosing to do nothing?
If the teacher was wrongly attacking the student, then the student would feel ostracized
and could feel unsafe in the school. This would greatly impact their ability to learn and function,
and could be heightened if they saw you in the hallway, but knew you never reported it.

Scenario 7.3
In this situation, was photocopying the score legal?
Photocopying the score was not legal, because it was photocopied for a performance,
which is banned in the copyright laws.
What other option might Scott have had?
Scott could have had a student share their score with Kamini, or he could have asked
other schools/directors in the area if they had one he could potentially borrow for the concert
briefly.
Scenario 7.4
Did Yunshu make the right decision?
Yes, I think that Yunshu made the right decision. Copying the music would have been
illegal, and Yunshu should not be placed in the position as a student teacher to break the law.
How did ethics come into play in this situation?
The band and students need the music, and denying them the privilege could impact their
learning, however, it would also be wrong for Yunshu to copy the music for many reasons
because it would be illegal.
How would you have handled this situation?
I would have brought the music back to my teacher and asked her if she knew we couldn't
photocopy the music, and asked if there was anything else we could do instead.
How do you think her cooperating teacher responded?
I would hope that her cooperating teacher would be understanding of the situation and not
ask Yunshu to copy the music anyway. However, I could see the teacher getting mad at Yunshu
for not doing what she was asked.

How much do you know about disability legislation?

I know a little about disability legislation, but not as much as I should know. The only
things I know about legislation for people with disabilities is very broad, and I do not know any
specific details, cases, etc.
At this point in your student teaching, what kinds of experiences have you had in working
with students who have disabilities or special needs? Please discuss.
I have not had many experiences working with students with different needs in my
student teaching placements. The few that I have had though, have experienced attention,
hearing, and learning difficulties. All of the challenges though did not strongly impact their
classroom behavior, and so while I did provide them with accommodations, they often did not
use or utilize them.
How have you or your cooperating teacher adapted the curriculum, class materials, or
particular assignments to assist students with disabilities or special needs?
Oftentimes, we just change the structure of the whole class. We will do things such as
using many different types of methods and technology to teach one concept, and keep the
classroom environment moving along at an upbeat pace to prevent distraction. Also, for the
student of hard hearing, we would ensure that the classroom environment never had abrasive or
excessive noise going on.
Do you feel the music classroom(s) you are working in currently is/are conducive to
disabled or special needs students?
Yes, I do think that the music classroom I am in is conductive for students with and
without disabilities/challenges.
Have you been involved with the creation or implementation of an Individual Education
Plan (IEP) for a student with disabilities or special needs? How much do you know about
this process?
I have never been involved in the creation of an IEP, however, I do know how the
process works due to my background in studying special education. I feel as if I were asked to be
involved in the process, I would be able to do so effectively and with understanding.
