Brass Sectional (2 of 3)

Objectives:

 Breathing
 Reinforcing vocabulary
 Reinforcing hand positioning
 Reinforcing good breathing and playing skills
 First 5 notes of scale
 Playing on cues/in time

Procedure:

 Breathing
o “Try to make yourselves yawn”
o Keep that mouth-shape for breathing in and out
o Relax!
o In and out on cues
o In 4, out 4
 Getting instruments out + continuing breathing
o Informal assessment of parts of instrument and how to hold
o Blow warm air through instruments
 In and out on cues
 In 4 out 4
 Buzzing
o Blow air through mouthpiece first
o Then, start with blowing air and slowly bring lips together to create buzz
o Buzzing (any pitch) on cues
 Start sounds right away
 Sustain sound until cutoff
o Match pitch
 Concert F
 Concert Bb
o Sirens
 HighHighLow
 LLH

 On horns
o Blow air through horn first
o Then start blowing air and slowly bringing lips together for buzz
o Whatever notes come out, play that on cues
 Start right away and sustain note until cutoff

o Air pattern and finger through first 5 notes altogether
 Once with informally assessing (Who can tell me the next note name and
fingering?)
 Twice in time with piano
 I’ll count off and play the scale pattern
 Remember 3rd slide for trumpet!
o Play through the notes
 Bb to F first
 Then F to Bb
 Modalities
o Visual: demonstrating good techniques (L+R hand, breathing, fingerings, etc.), using
hands to show high vs low notes
o Aural: Play pitches out loud on piano, say and have students say names of notes and
fingerings aloud,
o Kinesthetic: have students move hands to represent high and low pitches, have them
try to yawn for good breathing techniques, have them mimic eating hot lasagna for
lower notes

Goals:

 The students will be able to breathe with good and healthy technique.
 The students will be able to efficiently warm up.
 The students will be able to play with healthy habits and easy technique.
 The students will be able to hold their instruments correctly.
 The students will be able to produce good tone on mouthpieces and horns.
 The students will be able to play the first 5 notes of the Bb scale with prompting.
