ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT (22032) STUDENT ACTIVITIES

STUDENT ACTIVITY-(I)Choose any advertisement and analyse its good

and bad points.

Introduction-

This is the age of digitalization and globalization. Because of this, the entire world seems to
be just a very large village. There are also many private and public businesses these days than
ever. And because of that more companies are investing in marketing or advertising about
their products and services than ever. Before proceeding any further it is important to
understand what advertising really is. And according to different experts, an advertisement
can be defined as a type of marketing conversation which consists of a calculated approach
through which a company notifies its target audience regarding its products and services in a
very proactive and strategic manner. The importance of advertising has grown so much over
the years that now it is considered to be one of the most essential factors to the growth and
success of any particular business or company. However, just like anything else in life, there
are bound to be positive and negative effects of advertising. And in this academic writing
piece, readers will be able to learn about positive advertising, negative advertising, positive
and negative effects of advertising, and the effects of advertising to children.

Searching for a better understanding of advertising as a communication model has led to

some interesting research. As an engineer, I naturally want to apply science and mathematics
to the equation. Newton’s third law of motion combined with the Chaos Theory comes to
mind when analyzing the findings. The question “what are the positive and negative effects
of advertising on the world” is still the motivation. I’ve tried to include information to serve
as a starting point for the unpublished research. So far, I’ve discovered one consistent
anomaly and constant feedback loop. The viewing audience’s free will is still a measure of
incalculable value. Yes, marketers and advertisers have a surplus of tools to help nudge,
persuade and even influence a person’s buying habits. From the classics like data derived
from demographic, geographic and ethnographic sources to more forward thinking solutions
like facial recognition, body language biometrics and even genetic profiling.

We have taken the example of Lays advertising and will be analysing its good and bad points:

Good points in this advertisement

In this section, we will be able to learn about the good and effective advertising. And some of
those examples which we can see in this advertisement are mentioned below.

The flavors get even crazier in the rest of the world-

In an attempt to cater to palates around the world, Lay's has flavors in other countries that
seem way crazier than chicken and waffles. Examples include ketchup in Canada, marmite in
the UK, feta cheese in Greece, vegemite in Australia, lasagna in Argentina, seafood and
mayonnaise in Thailand, and kiwi & blueberry in China.

They've taken people around the world.

In 2016, the "Do Us A Flavor" campaign was rebranded as "Passport to Flavor" and featured
flavors inspired by dishes from around the world, including Chinese Szechuan chicken,
Indian tikka masala and Brazilian picanha. In every bag was a code with "miles" that could be
added up and win you sweet prizes, from a tablet to a two-week trip to one of the locations
that inspired the chips.

They're not as bad for you as other snacks.

Though Lay's are chips and therefore not as good for you as, say, a piece of fruit, they are
still relatively not the worst. Lay's are cooked in corn, canola and sunflower oil (as opposed
to unhealthier oils). In 2003, the brand removed trans fats from its chips, so you can have a
bag and feel a little less guilty.

There are over 200 varieties of Lay's chips.

Lay's constantly mixes up their flavor lineup with over 200 varieties created to date.

The chips range from common flavors, like salt and vinegar and barbecue, to more unusual
ones, like cappuccino, vegetable soup, and Beer 'n Brats.

Bad points in this advertisement

Nitrogen is harmful-

The ‘air’ is actually Nitrogen which keeps the chips from going bad.

The "air" inside is actually Nitrogen which keeps the chips from going stale

Nitrogen also hinders from bacteria and other germs.

The air also gives a cushioning effect to the chips which without you'll just receive powder.
The air also gives the impression of being sealed tight .

In this last section, we will be able to learn about the negative effects of advertisements. And
some of those negative effects of advertisements are mentioned below.

Loaded with calories-

If you think that it’s just because of potatoes as the main ingredient, let us tell you it is
a myth. The reason lies in other elements used in the preparation of the chips. From
sub-standard oil to bad quality spices, they all add to an increase in calories and also
affect your digestive system.

They use a ton of potatoes.

According to a National Geographic article, a Frito-Lay plant in Perry, GA cooks about 1

million pounds of potatoes and makes an average of 175,000 boxes of chips every day .

Lay's probably owns all your favourite snacks.

Frito-Lay might be responsible for producing a ton of different Lay's chips per year, but the
snacking giant also makes some of your other faves including Cheetos, Fritos, Doritos, and
Ruffles. They also make some more under the radar snacks like Cracker Jacks, Funyuns, and
Matador jerky.

Leads to weight gain

According to a study conducted in 2015 called ‘Health Affairs’, potato chips are the
easiest source of gaining weight and it has been proven that every 10 gms of chips
contains around 160 calories.

Made with below-standard ingredients

As per reports, potato chips are never made with quality ingredients. The shocking
fact is that packaged chips are fried in poor quality oil and producers intentionally
supply such poor quality oil to reduce the production cost. According to dieticians,
eating these chips is as harmful as consuming 5 litres of cooking oil.

The Conclusion:

Advertising is a form of marketing communication through which a business or an

organization informs the target audience about its products and services. There are two major
types of advertisements. And those are positive and negative advertisements. There are also
many forms of advertisements. There are also many negative and positive effects of
advertisements like the unrealistic expectations, false image, and the social and economic
benefits of advertisements.
