The  top  four  IT  companies,  in­
cluding  Tata  Consultancy  Ser­
vices  (TCS),  Infosys,  Wipro  and
HCL Technologies, saw a major
comeback  in  big­ticket  deal
wins and client additions in the
$50  million  and  $100  million­
plus bucket in FY22.
Client  addition  in  the  $100
million­plus  bucket  grew  to  25
in FY22 from hardly any in FY21,
while  in  the  $50  million­plus
bucket,  42  clients  were added.
Meanwhile, for smaller revenue
buckets  of  $1  million­plus,  the
number  of  clients  added
touched 346 in FY22, up from 95
clients last fiscal, as per data ac­
cessed from CareEdge Advisory.
The deal momentum for FY22
was  driven  largely  by  clients’
cloud­based transformation ser­
vices  and  digital  transforma­
tion. Growth across verticals has
been  mostly  broad­based,  and
the  BFSI  vertical  continues  to
have  the  largest  share  and  the

able by such creditors stood at
₹1,288 crore, which is about 10.21
per cent.

In fact, what is worrying is that

has  floated  a  paper  on  calcu­
lating  the  escalation  rate  for
imported  coal  for  payment
on  a  monthly  basis,  which
will  be  used  by  Discoms  to
make  payments  to  Gencos
for purchasing electricity.
The  Government  wants  to
make  use  of  the  monthly  es­
calation  index  for  imported
coal  as  part  of  future  power
purchase agreements (PPAs).

for $8 million in 2012, $46 million in
2015, and $72 million in 2018. Busi-
nessLine caught up with Amit
Somani, Managing Partner at
Prime, who joined the firm in 2014,
to get a sense of investing trends.
Excerpts:
Congrats on the tenth
anniversary. What defines your
investing style and the journey
so far?
One  unique  thing  about  Prime  is
that we are all operators and entre­
preneurs,  company  builders  and
product  builders.  So  we  call
ourselves  accidental  VCs.  Back  in
2012,  when  Prime  was  started,  the
idea was to bring in a Silicon Valley
style of professionalism to India. It
started with a demo fund of a little
less  than  $8  million.  I  joined  the
firm two years after that in 2014. It
has been a wonderful journey so far.
We  have  seen  the  entrepreneurial
ecosystem,  capital  markets  and
ourselves  evolve.  From  a  modest
fund of $8 million in 2012, we have
come  to  $120  million  in  2022.  We
have invested so far in 40 compan­
need. Some want access to our Rolo­
dex. Some may want help in build­
ing  their  product  strategy  or  busi­
ness strategy.
How many exits in these ten
years?
We  have  had  several  exits.  In  2015,
there  was  ZipDial  to  Twitter.  Last
year  was  a  big  bonanza  with  three
big exits – Recko to Stripe, its first ac­
quisition  in  India,  Perpule  to
Amazon  India  and  Happay  was  ac­
quired by Cred. One of our compan­
ies  has filed for an IPO. Indian mar­
kets are opening up for IPOs.
Has your style of investing
changed over the last ten years?
We are an early­stage fund. We come
in  early,  when  a  lot  is  not  known
about the company. One thing that
has not changed is we look for cat­
egory­defining  companies.  Every
one of our companies is trying to do
something unique and different. Of
course,  you  will  eventually  bump
into  competition,  but  you  will  be
doing something hatke.
Isn’t it riskier to back such
companies?
Our loss has been very low. Out of 40
companies to date there have been
only three shutdowns.
So what has not changed in how
we invest is:
First, the fact we look for category
defining  companies.  We  say  the
firm must be doing 10x better than
the rest.
Second  thing  —  we  look  at

of time even before investing on fig­
uring  out  —  Can  this  be  a  large  vi­

What  has  changed  are  three
things  —  TAM,  Timing  and
Team.    Earlier  we  did  not  pay  too
much  attention  to  TAM  (Total  Ad­
dressable Market). Now we are only
willing to back companies that have
very large addressable markets.
Second, we pay more attention to
timing. The why now question. We
firmly believe there is no bad start­
up idea. It’s just the question of tim­
ing. There are great ideas that some­
times are too early.
Third, we have become more nu­
anced  on  how  we  back  entrepren­
eurs,  looking  at  the  team  and  the
people.
What are the broad trends in
investing in general today?
I think the market is flush with cap­
ital. Capital will become a commod­
ity. Firms will get distinguished by
either their circle of competence or
by  what  else  you  can  bring  to  the
table beyond capital. If you look at
the  US  and  China,  that’s  how  they
have evolved.  whatever  we  did.  I

many choices, but they are not go­
ing to talk to 200. So being special­
ised  will  become  crucial  for  VC

of  the  tech  industry  for  over  25
years, I mention it is unfortunate

she  says  “While  everybody  talks
about  inclusivity  and  diversity
now, Wipro was practising those
things  back  then,  by  offering
women like me opportunities.”
Eighteen months into her stint
in Pune, and her good work in
cracking  tough  government
deals,  and  ensuring  the  com­
meant  she  was  moved  to  the
more dynamic Bengaluru mar­
ket.  This  was  late  1990s,  and
with the Y2K boom and unpre­
cedented  growth  of  the  IT  sec­
tor,  opportunities  were  dime­a­

Wipro  tried  grooming  her  for
bigger roles by making her a part

was  not  attracted.  “My  brother
had  moved  to  the  Middle  East
and I wanted at least one of us to
stay  in  India,  if  our  parents  re­
quired,  especially  as  my  father
had retired by then.”  “That is because both companies

out to her. “There was no dearth
of  opportunities  and  I  had  been
approached  by  several  compan­
ies  earlier.  But  having  seen  how
Cisco works — its vision, passion,
ability  to  spot  business  adjacen­

months to send my resume,” she
says with a laugh. 
By  now,  having  polished  off  a
few  rotis myself,  I  point  out  she
has  hardly  consumed  anything,
as she continues to nibble on the
kebab  platter.  What  has  also  in­
trigued  me  is  unlike  most  tech­
nology  professionals,  in  her  26­
year career — she has worked only
with two companies, her first job
at  Wipro,  where  she  stayed  for
eight years, and now the current
one  at  Cisco  for  17  plus  years.

interacted with at least five of her
predecessors,  apart  from  two  of

ing,  hard­charging  place  with  a
high­pressure  environment,

they didn’t meet quarterly num­
bers.” 
Daisy  doesn’t  bat  an  eyelid
and says, “Yes, I had heard that

about being a postman
and  passing  on  things
down  the  line.  But

spiration  and  ensuring

customers  rather  than
transactional ones.

This announcement may just be
the beginning of another variety of
monetary  policy  presentation  in
terms  of  timing  and  content.
Should markets be ready for more
surprises?

governments of India and Italy.
The three proteins can prevent the progression of heart
attack towards heart failure. A UK-based biotech start-up,
Forcefield Therapeutics, of which Giaccia is the ‘Scientific
Founder’, is developing easily administrable formulations to
enable rapid treatment soon after an MI event, before the
heart damage becomes irreversible. In a press release from
Forcefield Therapeutics, Giacca notes, “Despite decades of
research, no current treatment is able to prevent the death of
cardiomyocytes or a reduction in lifespan and quality of life
following acute MI. By redefining the search for
cardioprotective therapies, we have identified proteins that
have not been previously linked to cardiac health, but which
hold the potential to retain heart function, preventing
premature death of heart cells and thus counteracting the
deleterious effects of MI.”
New wheat, chapati sweet
Scientists at the Punjab Agricultural
University (PAU) have developed a new
wheat variety — ’PBW1Chapati’ — which
they say will make for a dough that is more
pliable, sweet, chewy and fluffy. The wheat
variety has just been released to Punjab farmers for
cultivation.
Till now, the ‘gold standard’ wheat varieties for chapatis have
been C306 and PBW175. Both yield lovely chapatis, but the
plants have become susceptible to ‘stripe and brown rust’
diseases. The challenge, therefore, was to combine high-yield
potential and disease resistance.
The wheat breeding team at PAU has developed a new variety
using marker-assisted selection for a linked stripe rust and
leaf rust gene, Lr57/Yr40, in the PBW175 background. The
team has retained the chapati making parameters using
biochemical tests.
Methane capture

Chemical Technology (IICT), Hyderabad,
have computationally designed a hybrid
material that can capture methane and
also act as catalyst to convert it to
high-purity hydrogen. They have also
simulated and designed a process for in
situ capture of carbon dioxide and its conversion to
high-purity hydrogen from non-fuel grade bioethanol
through a mechanism called optimised intensified chemical
looping reforming. The latter research has been published in
the Elsevier journal Chemical Engineering and Processing.
The researchers have also fabricated a facility at the institute
to further the study on carbon capture and conversion.

is hopeful of going ahead with
its India IPO by the end of this
fiscal. 
Listed  on  the  Nasdaq  in
December  2016,  the  company
announced on March 25 that its
Indian subsidiary, Yatra Online
Limited, has filed a draft red her­
ring  prospectus  (DRHP)  with
the market regulator SEBI for an
initial public offering, aggregat­
ing up to ₹750 crore or approx­
imately $100 million of primary
proceeds, and a secondary offer­
ing  of  up  to  88,96,998  equity
shares by Travel Holding Cyprus
Limited,  a  subsidiary  of  Yatra
Online  Inc,  which  amounts  to
approximately 8 per cent of the
shares outstanding of Yatra On­
line. 
“We are in the early stage of
the IPO processes and are await­
primary  and  secondary  offer­
ings,  we  will  look  to  raise
around  ₹1,000­crore  odd.  So,
our endeavour would be to have
the IPO by the end of this fiscal,”

paradigms like the Metaverse.
From a retailer in Texas to a
lipstick­maker  in  India,  what
emerged at the event was that
brands  around  the  globe  are
already  on  the  road  to  the
Metaverse,  virtual  spaces  that
users  can  create  and  explore
with  others.  It  is  not  just  a
buzzword  for  the  future,  but
something  brands  have  to
transition to fast.
Pointing  out  that  con­
sumers are increasingly inter­
ested  in  ever­evolving  tech,
