GUIDE 1B

In this lesson we'll see the future, vocabulary about family and adjectives of personality and
we'll concentrate on how to pronounce the endings of some adjectives, and we'll see the
stress in a sentence and word stress.

VOCABULARY AND SPEAKING (page8)

Do exercises c and d (read the text, complete the gaps and check with the audio).

We'll do exercises a, b and e in class, but have a look at the instructions and questions at
home, please. We’ll use the "Useful language" box on page 7, as well as the one on page 8 to
give our opinions in class about the different questions.

GRAMMAR (page9)

We’ll do exercises a, b and c in class. Then do exercise d (see that exercise ‘d’ tells you to go to
page 133, read the explanation and do the exercises on that page). At the end of the guide I'll
provide you with a summary about the future with sentences as examples.

TIP: In order to learn the grammar in context, it's a good idea to make your own sentences
about you using the new grammar. It means time and effort, but it's worthy.

PRONUNCIATION (page 9)

Pronunciation is extremely important in order to be understood when you speak.

This time we are going to deal with sentence stress. Read the box with the magnifying glass on
page 9 ‘Sentence stress’ and do exercises a and b. It is a good idea to record yourself, listen to
the recording once you've finished and check with the model, so that you can compare your
pronunciation to the audio pronunciation.

Read exercise c and prepare the answers for class. We'll practise those questions and answers
check in pairs in class.

READING (page10)

Exercise a is an introduction to the topic of the text: think about the questions before you
continue. Then read the text in order to have a general idea about what the text is about.
Answer the question in exercise c.

Exercise d is about how to get the meaning of unknown words from the context, so do not use
a dictionary to do it.

Pay attention to the box ‘Each other’. We'll do exercise e in class.

TIP: When we read a text or a book, we mustn't use a dictionary to look up new words: we
must try to get the meaning of those unknown words from the context. If we can't get the
meaning, at least try to get the idea, that is, if it's something positive or negative, if it's a verb
or a noun, e.g.

When can we use a dictionary then? When we have finished reading and we have understood
most of it, then we can use a dictionary to make sure we have thoroughly understood some
words, or to check the pronunciation.

VOCABULARY (page11)

Now we'll see the vocabulary section of the lesson. Have a look at exercise a and go to page
153 and do the whole page. Take your time, do not use a dictionary and pay attention to the
"False friends" box. As regards negative prefixes, you've got to learn their opposites, because
they are difficult to predict. We'll do exercise c on page 11 in class.

TIP: Think of a person you know for each adjective of personality; it'll be easier for you to
remember the meaning of the adjective. E.g. jealous - my expartner

PRONUNCIATION (page11)

This is something really important in pronunciation: where the stress is. Do both exercises and
pay attention to the separation of syllables too.

TIP: Get used to underlining the stressed syllable in the words you find difficult to remember.

LISTENING AND SPEAKING (page11)

Exercise a is a question about the topic of the listening task. Follow the instructions to do
exercise b (read the cover of the book too). Listen to it twice if necessary. You can pause after
each kind of child so you can add / check your answers, and listen to more details. The script is
on page 122, but do not read it until you have finished the whole exercise. We'll talk about this
conversation in class.

WRITING TASK (page11)

PRE-TASK ACTIVITIES: Go to page 113, read the two descriptions and do exercises b, c and d
and read the ‘Useful language: describing a person’ box.

TASK: you are looking for an ideal partner and have decided to use a dating site called
"SoulMate". Write a post (80-100 words) in the forum provided explaining what you want your
ideal partner to be like (age, physical description, personality, hobbies...)

GOAL: use the grammar and vocabulary from the unit.

TIMING: wait until you have worked the vocabulary and grammar of the unit. You can add your
post until 18th October. Posts written after that date will not be taken into account.

CORRECTION: the teacher will comment on common mistakes found in the posts in the same
forum.
