6 Aesthetics in the Wild
The problem with human-oriented creation 7
9. As Van Dijk, Van der Lugt, & Hummels, 2014 point out.
10. For example, it calls cognition “distributed” (Hutchins, 1995b),
perception “active” (Gibson, 1979), and the mind “embodied”
(Varela, Thompson, & Rosch, 1991) or “extended” (Clark &
Chalmers, 1998).
Situatedness in art and design 29
12. When Bridle (2011) coined the phrase “the new aesthetic”, the
response he received was overwhelming, leading Berry, Dieter,
Kasprzak, Muller, O’Reilly, Vicente and myself (2012) to write a
book about why the notion caused such an upheaval.
Situatedness in art and design 35
15. See, e.g., Van Dartel and Nigten (2015) for a discussion of
artistic and design research that addresses the issue of waste
produced by the technology industry, or Van Dartel and Nigten
(2014) for a discussion of art and design concerned with how
technology informs social organisation.
42 Aesthetics in the Wild
18. See Manzotti (2012), Stern (2013) and Scarinzi (2015), for
example.
19. For instance, in line with the classic computational theory of
mind, Zeki (1999) argues that aesthetic experiences rely on the
passive processing of symbols in the brain.
Art and design practice after the situated turn 55
Teaching situatedness
With respect to the first pedagogical refocusing that the
situated turn calls for, three considerations are important to
take into account:
23. See Deakin (2014) for an example of how art and design
academies are politically pressured to educate people for
these industries.
62 Aesthetics in the Wild
28. See Pickering (1995), Salter, Van Dartel, and Smoak (2012), or
Salter (2015) for discussions on “material agency” in research
practices.

choreografie in uitmondde.
18. Zie onder meer Manzotti (2012), Stern (2013) en Scarinzi (2015).

(Spence,
2011).
Kunst- en ontwerppedagogiek na 147
de gesitueerde wending
28. Zie Pickering (1995), Salter, Van Dartel & Smoak (2012), en Salter
(2015) voor een bespreking van ‘material agency’ (materieel
handelingsvermogen) bij het doen van onderzoek.

In this essay, Michel van Dartel shows that the stakes involved
in this isolation are higher than they may appear at first glance.
As we live in cities developed around data and act within the
inscrutable structure of the present-day economy, there exists
an unprecedentedly urgent need for artists and designers
to help us understand how we relate to our surroundings.
Connecting ideas from fields ranging from cognitive science to
avant-garde art and design history, Van Dartel argues that we
need to consider aesthetics “in the wild” if we are to respond to
this exigency.
Professor Michel van Dartel (b. 1976) leads the research group
in Human-Centred Creation at the Expertise Centre for Art and
Design at Avans University of Applied Sciences. With the teachers
and students of the School of Fine Art and Design AKV|St.Joost
and Avans’ Communication & Multimedia Design courses, he
conducts practice-based research on situated approaches to
art and design.
