WHAT YOU

NEED TO
KNOW: ABOUT
COVID-19!
THE BEGINNING, ‘IT’ ENTERED INDONESIA
The first COVID-19 case in Indonesia happened back in March 2020, when two people
tested positive for the corona virus or COVID-19. Minister of Health, Terawan Agus
Putranto, explained that the two people were women aged 64 and 31 who had a mother-
daughter relationship. Both were known to have contracted the virus after coming into
contact with a Japanese national who lived in Malaysia and previously met in Indonesia.
Since the first case was announced, the number of positive cases of COVID-19 has
continued to increase.
In early January, there is a new type of corona virus that was
announced that it can be transmitted between human and has begun
to spread in various countries other than Wuhan, China. The
Indonesian government did not immediately close access to direct
flights to and from Wuhan. The Indonesian government feels that it is
sufficient to take anticipatory steps. Provinces that have direct flight
access to and from Wuhan have a significant increase in confirmed
cases, such as in Jakarta. To suppress the spread of COVID-19,
President Joko Widodo established a Large-Scale Social Restriction
(PSBB) policy. This policy is also regulated in a Government Regulation
(PP) which has been signed by the president.

The government has also issued a Government Regulation (PP) on Large-Scale Social
Restrictions, and a Presidential Decree regulating public health emergencies. The Indonesian
government through the Minister of Law and Human Rights, Yasonna Laoly, has issued a
temporary ban on entry or transit in Indonesia for foreigners. This step is taken to reduce the
spread of the corona virus (COVID-19) in Indonesia.

THE FIRST VACCINE HAS ARRIVED!!

COVAX is a COVID-19 vaccine that is used to inactivate the COVID-19. COVAX is a type of vaccine
that was developed by an Indian biotechnology company, named Bharat Biotech, on their
collaboration with Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). On 8 March 2021, around 11 million
of its first batch was delivered to Indonesia, and still going on until May 2021. The origin of the
vaccine is from a South Korea company, AstraZeneca, under the supervision of COVAX.

The delivery of vaccines from the COVAX company is a result

from teamworks between ministries in Indonesia and
international organizations; donor countries; GAVI, the Vaccine
Alliance; WHO; UNICEF, and other company. Not only that,
because of an agreement, the vaccine is free for Indonesian
people. The vaccine has been tested by WHO, but it is still under
research. Even so, it is still used because it is urgent. Many of
Indonesian people are not worry about the vaccine, because MUI
said that the vaccine is halal to use.

The first person to receive vaccines in Indonesia’s free mass

vaccinations is the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo. The
vaccination occurred on Wednesday, January 13, 2021, at the
Merdeka Palace, Jakarta. This vaccination is the starting point of
implementing national vaccination in Indonesia as an effort to
deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. The vaccines have gone
through a number of clinical trials involving 1,620 volunteers in
Bandung.
