NEED TO
KNOW: ABOUT
COVID-19!
THE BEGINNING, ‘IT’ ENTERED INDONESIA
The first COVID-19 case in Indonesia happened back in March 2020, when two people
tested positive for the corona virus or COVID-19. Minister of Health, Terawan Agus
Putranto, explained that the two people were women aged 64 and 31 who had a mother-
daughter relationship. Both were known to have contracted the virus after coming into
contact with a Japanese national who lived in Malaysia and previously met in Indonesia.
Since the first case was announced, the number of positive cases of COVID-19 has
continued to increase.
In early January, there is a new type of corona virus that was
announced that it can be transmitted between human and has begun
to spread in various countries other than Wuhan, China. The
Indonesian government did not immediately close access to direct
flights to and from Wuhan. The Indonesian government feels that it is
sufficient to take anticipatory steps. Provinces that have direct flight
access to and from Wuhan have a significant increase in confirmed
cases, such as in Jakarta. To suppress the spread of COVID-19,
President Joko Widodo established a Large-Scale Social Restriction
(PSBB) policy. This policy is also regulated in a Government Regulation
(PP) which has been signed by the president.
The government has also issued a Government Regulation (PP) on Large-Scale Social
Restrictions, and a Presidential Decree regulating public health emergencies. The Indonesian
government through the Minister of Law and Human Rights, Yasonna Laoly, has issued a
temporary ban on entry or transit in Indonesia for foreigners. This step is taken to reduce the
spread of the corona virus (COVID-19) in Indonesia.
