Adverbs and comparative adverbs

I. 1. to describe verbs

Eg. Run quickly!

She shouted angrily.

2. before adjectives

Eg. It was really cold on Friday.

The tea was incredibly hot, so I couldn’t drink it.

II. 1. Adjective + -ly

Eg. slow – slowly

nice - nicely

quick - quickly

2. –le = drop the –e and add -ly

Eg. incredible – incredibly

possible – possibly

3. a consonant + -y = -i + -ly

Eg. angry – angrily

hungry – hungrily

lucky – luckily

III. Irregular Adverbs


Eg. good - well

fast - fast

early - early

late – late

hard – hard
! late – the opposite of early

lately = recently

eg. The activity started late.

He’s been studying hard lately.

IV. Comparative Adverbs


1. short adverbs + -er/ -r +than

Eg. I worked harder than her.

2. long adverbs = more + adverb + than

Eg. She does things more easily than me.

3. well – better + than

far – further + than

eg. He cooks better than me.

London to New York is further than London to Paris.
