ELVIS PRESLEY
Elvis Presley was born in 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi. He moved with his parents to Memphis Tennessee when he was
13. His family didn’t have a lot of money, and lived in public housing. As a teenager he was shy, but took up the guitar.
His teachers told him he had no talent for singing, and music class was the only class he ever failed.
Presley was influenced by “black music” genres like gospel and blues, and worked as a truck driver after graduating high
school. In 1953 he recorded his first single as a gift to his mother. He tried to join bands around Memphis, who rejected
him–advising him to stick to truck driving because he was never going to be successful as a singer.
When he was 19 he was given the opportunity to do a studio recording. The producer was hoping to find a white musician
who could bring black music to a wider audience. In the Southern US, whites and blacks were segregated and many
whites refused to listen to black music. In fact Presley had to go to see blues concerts on special nights reserved only for
a white audience. He recorded the single “That’s All Right, which was played on the radio and well-received by the public.
He signed a recording contract for $40,000 when he was just 20 years old. $40,000 was an unprecedented amount of
money for a young artist at the time. The year was 1955, and Elvis was about to change American culture forever…

DESCRIBING A FILM
Rebecca: The famous actor Ted Dansen is in the film for about 3 minutes. It's a shame that he wasn't in the film for
longer. Also, do you know that although the film is set in France during the D-Day invasion, it was actually filmed in the
south of England?'
Simon:'Yeah, I think it was one of the best films directed by Steven Spielberg. I love the opening scene when they are
landing on the beach on D-Day. That scene has some of the best twenty minutes of action in the whole history of cinema
for me. The special effects are excellent, with the explosions and the people being blown up. It looks so real.'
Rebecca:'It's an excellent scene, I always remember the stunt of the men on fire. But for me, I like the scene when the
men are walking in the countryside and talking about why they have to save Private Ryan. The dialogue is excellent, I can
imagine that I would say that if I were in a similar situation.'

My Beautiful Country:
It is the only South American country with coasts on the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.
The countries that have borders on the continent with Colombia
are: Venezuela (east), Brazil (southeast), Peru (south), Ecuador (southwest) and Panama (west). The countries that have
borders with Colombia on the sea are: Nicaragua, Panama, Costa
Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Haiti and Dominican Republic.
More than 50 million people live in Colombia.[11] It is the third most populated country in Latin America
after Mexico and Brazil.

The capital of Colombia is Bogotá. The second city is Medellín, a large industrial center. The third largest city is Cali,
home to many multinational companies. The most important city of the country on the Caribbean coast is  Barranquilla. It
was also the first national port. Cartagena de Indias has a great Spanish wall from the 17th Century and an old town with
500-year-old buildings. After these cities comes Bucaramanga, a large city near the Venezuelan border, and the center of
the textile industry in Colombia
