Activity and Analysis:

Now, critique the work based on the following. Write your answers on the spaces provided

1. Formal qualities: simply enumerate the elements that you see: the quality of lines, shapes,
colors, etc

It is a black and gray themed sketch with free hand lines and smooth light and dark
shading. The main thing that I really love about this art piece is the smoothness of the shading
and the clean thick lines used in the outline of every characters.

2. Formal qualities: simply enumerate the elements that you see: the quality of lines, shapes,
colors, etc

The Artist wants to tackle about the educational status of our country which is really a
huge topic nowadays.

3. Composition: Consider the arrangement of objects, people, or elements. What is most

prominent? Who or what is on the foreground, middle ground, and background?

I think the prominent character for this art work is the children which can be also seen
on the foreground of the art piece. The thing that was in the middle ground is text that is written
in a piece of a paper and shows a picture of Rizal. And the background is a simple plain black
that I think symbolizes hardships and difficulties.

4. Technique: Looking at the technique and manner of painting and composition, how is it
related to the artist’s objective?

By looking at the quality of the dark shading and the darkness of the outlines I think the
artist uses charcoal pencil which is a very good technique to show the emotion of the art to the
audience.

5. Content: What do you think the artwork is all about after carefully examining its parts? What
story, what message, and what argument is the artist trying to tell?

The story that the artist wants to express in this artwork is all about the educational
status of the students here in the Philippines. He wants to tell us a message that poverty is not a
hindrance in gaining knowledge, that there are still students who are still persistent to achieve
their goals in life.
6. Analysis: Further dig into the artist’s intention in terms of the relationship of each part to the
whole. Keep asking why, and try to answer them based on visual clues. Research further if
needed, especially if there is historical connection.

7. Your own criticism about the work: provide a coherent and convincing judgement about the
work.

As a person who also draws black and gray themed artworks, all I can say is that it is a
very smooth and flawless art piece. From the outlines down to the shadings, the artist definitely
hits the black and gray concept very well.
