Topic: Present versus Past habits (Present Simple/ used to)

ASSUMPTIONS
 Students might find difficult to identify some forms of the verbs.

 To make clearer connections between a stage and the next one

 textbook, power point presentation ,laptop, overhead projector, worksheets.
 The Updated Romanian Curriculum for 5th -8th graders

Learning activities :
By the end of the lesson the students will be able to:

 to talk about the way they used to look and the way they look now;
 to improve their grammar knowledge on Present Simple Tense for present habits
and ‘used to’ for past habits.
 to talk about their past habits opposed to their present ones;
 to find as many differences as they can regarding the people from the text;

STAGES OF THE LESSON

1. Activity 1 :Warm-up (2 minutes)

Interaction: T-Ss, S-T


Timing: 2 minutes
Techniques: discussions
Aims: to check attendance and to create atmosphere.

The teacher greets the students and makes sure the conditions are proper to start the
lesson (the students on duty name the absentees if necessary).

2. Activity 2: Checking the homework (5 minutes)


Interaction: T-S, S-Ss
Techniques: discussion
Aims: to check homework

The teacher asks pupils to open their notebooks and check the homework. The students
answer and say that they had to write a presentation of their family. The teacher asks
some students to read their homework and corrects them when necessary.

3. Activity 3 : Pre-reading ( 5 minutes)


Interaction: T-S, T-Ss
Techniques: discussion, brainstorming
Aims: to raise expectations and prepare for reading.

T asks Ss some questions using the structures they are going to study. Ss answer these
questions:
1. What school subjects do you study now?
2. When you were in primary school did you use to study the same subjects?
3. How many teachers do you have now?
4. How many teachers did you use to have/did you have before?
5. What time do you finish school now?
6. And did you use to finish your lesson at the same hour?

4. Activity 4 : While-reading (12 minutes)

Interaction: T-S, T-Ss, S-Ss


Techniques: reading aloud, listening, questioning
Aims: to assess comprehension and to make students active while reading.

T asks some Ss to read the text aloud. The others listen or read it silently. T stops the
reading repeatedly and asks some vocabulary questions. T asks Ss to underline the verbs
in Present Simple from paragraphs 1 and 3, and the structures with ‘used to’ from
paragraphs 2 and 4.

5. Activity 5 : Post reading (13 minutes)

Interaction: T-S, T-Ss, S-Ss


Techniques: discussions
Aims: to allow students provide their own examples using the new grammatical
structures

After reading the lesson, T asks Ss to give their own examples using Present Simple and
‘used to’. Ss create their own examples and write the sentences on the blackboard. T asks
Ss to identify the difference between the two structures and then he writes on the
blackboard:

Present Simple: expresses present habits/ things that happen repeatedly in the present.
Used to: expresses past habits/ things that happened repeatedly in the past but which are
now finished.

6. Activity 5 : Feed-back (10 minutes)

Interaction: T-Ss, S-Ss, group - work


Aims: to practice the new grammar structure.

The teacher pins up a big poster portraying the evolution of fashion. The students are
asked to talk about the clothes the people used to wear 300 years ago and what they wear
now.
T gives Ss handouts with Present Simple and ‘used to’. Ss are asked to work in groups.
Ss solve the exercises and then they read aloud. T corrects when necessary.

7. Homework (3 minutes)

Interaction: T- Ss
Timing: 3 minutes
Aims: to give further practice on the topic.

Students are given a worksheet taken from Grammar way 2 to be solved at home. The
students are praised for their contribution to the lesson.
