Stages of lesson

1. Warm-up (5 min)
Interaction: T-Ss
Teacher’s role: Controller
Teacher greets the students and asks them how they spent their weekend and whether they
like watching movies.

2. Activity 1- Engage (5 min)


Interaction: T- Ss
Teacher’s role: Prompter/Organiser/Resource
Teacher tells them that they’re going to talk about survival and people who made history
due to their courage and self-determination. Teacher asks the students to think of 3
people/characters who defied death and hardships and made their way through.(science,
sports, etc.)

3. Activity 2- Pre-listening (3 min)


Interaction: T-Ss
Teacher’s role: Organiser/Resource
Teacher tells students that they’re going to watch the trailer of the movie ‘’Castaway‘’
(2000) that shows a man who shipwrecked on a deserted island and how he managed to
survive for four years, being completely isolated from the civilized world.

4. Activity 3- Listening (10 min)- extensive listening


Skills: listening for specific information, listening for detailed information
Interaction: T-Ss;
Teacher’s role: Organiser/Operator/Feedback organiser
Teacher plays the video as many times as it needs and asks students to listen to it carefully.
After listening, teacher gives students sheets of paper to draw the island they saw in the
trailer. They have to complete a table with numbers, names or dates that appear in the
recorded material.

5. Activity 4- Speaking (12 min)


Focus: interacting with others, language processing
Interaction: T-Ss, Ss-Ss
Teacher’s role: Prompter/Participant/Feedback provider
Teacher tells them to imagine they shipwrecked on a deserted island and had only 10 (ten)
items with them, such as a mosquito net, a compass, some petrol, a razor, a punctured
floating boat, a box of chocolates, a transistor radio, a box of matches, a blade and some
paper. They have to put all the items in the order of their importance. Students work in
groups of 4. Each group has a spokesperson that tells the class about their choices. Finally,
teacher writes on the flipchart the most appropriate list of ten items they would make use of.
6. Activity 5- Writing (8 min)
Focus: coherence
Interaction: T-Ss
Teacher’s role: Motivator/Resource/Feedback provider
Teacher tells students to write down an imaginary dialogue between them and the
protagonist of the movie, Chuck Noland. (no more than 6 lines) Then, teacher calls 2
students to come over and sit down in front of the classroom. They take it in turns and ask
each other the questions they wrote down.

7. Homework (2 min)
Interaction: T-Ss

Teacher gives positive feedback to those students who contributed in class and encourages
the other ones to be more confident and active. For the next time, they need to write about a
regular day of Chuck Noland on the island. (no more than 100 words)
